At the Toledo Museum of Art, our rich history includes blending various art forms. However, we've often prioritized painting and sculpture over textiles, ceramics, and glass. This outdated hierarchy is something we’ve been striving to change for years. Now, as digital art emerges as a significant medium, we're dedicated to recognizing its value from the start. By collecting digital art early, we hope to create a collection that future generations will appreciate just as much as our renowned Impressionist works. We're proud to lead in this area, embracing all art forms with inclusivity.

Earlier this month, TMA Conda Family Manager of Access Initiatives, Katie Shelley attended the International Council of Museums (ICOM) annual conference in Seoul, South Korea. Katie’s presentation on “Building a Sustainable Accessible Infrastructure at TMA” was the perfect fit for the 2024 conference theme, “Museums and the Sustainable Development Goals — Towards 2030.” During her time in Seoul, Katie collaborated with industry professionals about accessibility initiatives they are executing at their own institutions. While it was a business trip, she also had some free time to explore and experience the culture of Seoul. Visit @toledomuseum on Instagram to see more highlights from “Katie In Korea".

People love working at TMA. Employees are generally fond of and loyal to the Museum. The strategic plan and the belonging plan are strengths of the organization. These documents have put the Museum in the forefront of innovation. There is a deeper commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI) initiatives here than most organizations. It is not performative, rather, a genuine desire to center humanity and provide access to the art. There is a positive community perception of the Museum, and value for its presence in Toledo. Internally, there are strong collaborative practices, confidence in and trust for the Director and CEO, and positive employee engagement. TMA is excited to partner with Yatreda ያጥሬዳ to develop an immersive exhibition surrounding one of Ethiopia's most iconic rituals: House of Yatreda. House of Yatreda will be part of TMA's upcoming exhibition Ethiopia at the Crossroads, placing Yatreda's motion portrait artwork alongside beloved artifacts spanning 1700 years of Ethiopia's rich history, culture and artistic traditions. The immersive experience includes live performances which will be activated several times throughout the exhibition period. The Yatreda collective has been appointed as TMA Labs' 2024 Digital Artist in Residence, and will also mentor Ohio-based artist Jordan Buschur in the Web3 environment, fostering community engagement and promoting cross-cultural understanding. Toledo street photographer James "dirtykics" Dickerson started capturing the lives of Black Americans living in Toledo through his camera lens in 2016. He approached these individuals with a listen first, photograph second mentality. From this approach spawned a collection that he hopes will encourage viewers to check their preconceived notions about the communities that surround them. His exhibition will run at TMA through July 14, come view it while you can.
