Learning & Development Strategist, Speaker, & Facilitator | HBR & Fast Co. Contributor | I help organizations develop employees' competencies and mindsets to improve performance, productivity, engagement, & retention.

Research and our own experiences makes it pretty clear that employees want opportunities to learn. And as they enhance their skills, they become more productive, benefiting both themselves and the organization as a whole. 💪 It isn’t, however, always easy to know the best ways to create meaningful opportunities for growth. 🪴 And one reason for this is that creating successful learning environments requires us to use what we know about how people learn 🧠 and understand the influence of context. 🧱Learning science principles are foundational to a lot of the work that learning and development professionals do. And they SHOULD inform learning and development efforts—but that’s not always the case! ⚙️Anyone who is working to create workplace learning opportunities so people can deepen their current skills and learn news ones, needs to know things that can help them and things that can get in the way of success. I had a great time talking about these issues this week with a group of coaches, educators, and L&D professionals 🙏🙏 My mission is to bring learning science out of the ivory tower and into the workplace to improve outcomes for all! Let me know if you're interested in the recording of our session ➡️ Pathways to Growth: How to Create a Strong Learning Culture to Support Meaningful Employee Career Development and I'll share it with you! #retention #workplacelearning #employeeengagement #growth #learningscience To Eleven, LLC

As a learning design consultant, one of the first things I caution educators moving to online or hybrid teaching, is not to abandon all the techniques, and practices that are effective for in-person teaching. 💡Instead, a successful remote or hybrid learning experience rests on educators considering the new context and making adaptations as necessary. The same goes for leadership; while it’s true that managing remote employees has emerged as a key leadership skill in and of itself, success lies in considering how your existing leadership skills interact with a remote or hybrid working context. Happy to share my latest article for Training Industry, Inc. on how to lead virtual and hybrid teams! 👇 To Eleven, LLC #virtualwork #remotework #leadership #trust #remoteleadership

    Accountability partners work!!!

Learning & Development Strategist, Speaker, & Facilitator | HBR & Fast Co. Contributor | I help organizations develop employees' competencies and mindsets to improve performance, productivity, engagement, & retention.

I recently rediscovered the benefits of having an accountability partner. A month ago, I connected on Zoom with a dear old friend I hadn’t talked to in a while. We chatted for a couple of hours one rainy Sunday and during our conversation, the talk turned to fitness and related goals. 🏃♀️ My friend shared that she wanted to get more consistently active and do more walking or running but kept making excuses or finding obstacles to doing so. She also shared that she had a treadmill in her basement and like many treadmills, it had not been used in forever. 📺 I told her I had a treadmill in the garage that I use all the time. My secret? My husband Jay created a shelf in front of it and on the shelf is a computer monitor and a Roku box so I can watch things while I run. And the best part is that I can watch things that I wouldn't typically make time to watch—like late-night talk shows, or things that nobody else in the house wants to watch. And so I can make my time on the treadmill go faster, and watch something that often falls into the ‘guilty pleasure’ category. I watched the SAG awards the other day—something I wouldn’t have bothered with, but it was a good choice for treadmill fodder! She loved the idea of creating a similar set-up. We could have left the conversation at that, but instead I suggested we have a follow-up Zoom call four weeks from then, and my challenge to her was to see if she could clear some space and find a way to put a screen in front of her treadmill. Yesterday was the four-week check in. And as you can see from the before and after pictures, she did it! I was so happy, and she was so happy to have been given the challenge and followed through on it. And moved her closer to achieving her goal. 🎯 Setting an intention and sharing it with someone who is going to hold you to it can be a powerful motivator! Next time we talk I’m excited to hear if she has achieved her goal of at least walking on it three times a week! #motivation #accountabilitypartner #goalsetting #intentionsetting To Eleven, LLC

Excited to be working on one of the last sets of notes for a short film I’ve been editing! I love this stage of refining a cut. It shows me how much of an impact a series of small changes can make on how a movie feels. Looking forward to sharing more about this project soon!

Happy to share that the new book, "Evidence-Based Organizational Practices for Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging and Equity, is out now! The book was edited by Vanguard University of Southern California professor Ludmila Praslova, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, Âû. Ludmila is an expert on creating better organizations through neurodiversity and intersectional inclusion, and also clearly very good at "herding cats"! She coordinated contributions from myself along with Tamela Hawley, Bernard Bagorio, SHRM-CP, Gena Cox, PhD, Tara Cunningham, Debra Kurtz, Fernanda Wolburg Martinez, M. S., Maha Bali, Steve Hunt, Julie Lee, Ph.D., Bonni Stachowiak, Liana Bernard, M.S., ABD, Stefanie Fox, PhD, Kay Kulason, Dr. Joseph Nwoye, Josie Velasco, Olivia Bouchard, and Dr. Norlan Hernández Blandón. The chapter I contributed, "Designing Inclusive Onboarding through a Learning Engineering Lens", discusses key learning principles and how they apply when creating effective and inclusive learning experiences and climates in which employees will be supported and learn what they need to succeed in their first days and months on the job. I love (and second) Ludmila's dedication in the book: "To every hard-working human who has been misunderstood, stereotyped, and excluded. We see you. And we work hard to help create workplaces where diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity are woven into all practices." 👇 To Eleven, LLC

Love this Jason Rosoff! So important to recognize that not everyone has a desire to move into a leadership role. And that there are other ways to grow and have impact within one's chosen career. #radicalcandor #impact #growth

    CEO at Radical Candor, LLC

At some point during your career, you've likely asked yourself: Should I be a manager? 🤷♀️ We've mentioned on previous episodes of the Radical Candor #podcast that at many organizations the only opportunity for growth, advancement, and a pay bump is to become a manager. For folks who thrive on building a team and guiding others to achieve results, becoming a manager may be a dream come true. 🏆 On the other hand, management could be a nightmare for high-performing individual contributors who are experts in their fields but have a low frustration tolerance for herding cats. 🙀 How do you know if management is right for you? Kim and I discuss our paths to management. Listen wherever you get your podcasts or at https://bit.ly/3FXpsAL #herdingcats #management #manager #RadicalCandor

Love learning new things! Thanks to my mum for showcasing her creativity and teaching me about all the other colors of remembrance poppies. 👇

Tomorrow is Armistice Day in England (and Veteran's Day here in the US). A common sight in England, at this time of year, are poppies. Paper poppies worn by many on their lapels to commemorate Armistice Day. I remember being in primary school and getting excited that I could bring some money to school, make a donation and get a poppy to wear for a while. 🌺 The poppies are worn as a symbol of remembrance of those who fought in wars. The origin? The Western Front of Europe where much of the First Word War fighting took place. The countryside was ravaged by war. Beautiful landscapes were churned up and turned to muddy, barren fields. It turns out, this type of churning up of the soil is exactly the right kind of condition for resilient Flanders poppies to grow. Thus, poppies became a symbol of hope. Something beautiful growing from scenes of horror and war. 📝A soldier, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, wrote a poem called In Flanders Fields, inspired by the beauty he saw, growing from the chaos. Over the years, the simple paper poppy has inspired other creative expressions of remembrance. Case in point: My mum made this “topper” for a postbox in her village. And in the meantime, she also taught me what the other colors of poppies symbolize: 🌟Purple is for all of the animals (in particular horses) killed in the war. 🌟The black poppy commemorates the contributions of Black, African and Caribbean communities to the war effort - as servicemen and servicewomen, and as civilians. 🌟The white poppy commemorates people who died in conflict, but focuses on achieving peace and challenging the way we look at war. Thank you, mum, for bringing a little remembrance as well as joy and whimsy to a simple post box—and teaching me some new things in the process. I love it! #armisticeday #poppyday #remembranceday #veteransday #peace To Eleven, LLC
