Today is National Lemon Day! We celebrate the fruit that contains high levels of vitamin C, protecting the body against the common cold and bacteria. In the U.S., lemons are grown on trees in warm climates – especially Arizona, California and Florida.

There are designer purses 👛, clothes 👖, shoes 👠… and now #designerfruit has been gracing produce departments across the country. Designer fruits 🍊 are bred to be sweet and delicious, and they require more intensive care to grow. For example, Sumo Citrus Fruit, a designer mandarin, is treated with sunscreen in the fields, handpicked and transported 🚚 to the packaging house in an air ride trailer to ensure the ride is not too bumpy.

Peach 🍑 season is here and thanks to N.C. State’s 🐺 now-retired #peach breeder, there are varieties available specifically suited to North Carolina’s climate. Chilling hours, the number of total hours that a fruit tree must spend in temperatures below 40 degrees 🥶 during the dormant (winter) season, are a key factor in determining where certain peaches can grow. North Carolina peaches require approximately 1,000 or more chilling hours which is on the higher ⬆️ end of chilling requirements compared to South Carolina peaches that require 850 hours or less.

🎶 “Shoo fly, don’t bother me…” 🎶 says the age-old tune. Cows 🐮 don’t have the luxury of “shooing” flies 🪰 and one cow can house up to 1,000 flies in a day. Just 200 flies can cause about 0.4 pint of blood lost each day. Beyond that, flies can spread a blood-transmitted disease called anaplasmosis which can cause severe anemia in cattle.

Thanks to the N.C. State #peanut 🥜 breeding program, we can enjoy the classic roasted-in-shell “baseball game peanuts,” also called Virginia type peanuts. N.C. State is one of the only peanut breeding programs across the nation that focuses on Virginia peanuts.
