Advancing Technology for High-Repetition Rate Intense Laser Laboratories

About us

The THRILL project provides new schemes and devices for pushing forward the limits of research infrastructures of European relevance and ESFRI landmarks. Eight partners joined forces not only to work on advancing technology in the field of high-energy high-repetition-rate lasers, but also to train a highly skilled workforce for tomorrow’s challenges in research infrastructures and industry. The project has received funding by the European Union’s HORIZON-INFRA-2022-TECH-01 call under grant agreement number 101095207. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission. 📢 Event announcement: A THRILL Project 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 will be held in conjunction with the LPA Special Workshop on Intelligent Systems at the University of Oxford from 13-16 January 2025. As part of the workshop, THRILL will host dedicated sessions within Task 5.3 on Adaptive Optics (AO) integration. We will kick-start the development of an open-source, global beam control software framework by bringing together all partner institutes within THRILL and beyond to discuss current AO workflows, needs, and future developments. On-site participation is limited to 100 participants. Participation is free of charge. ➡ More info: https://lnkd.in/e_Ke6gVN

𝐎𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐒𝐔𝐌 𝐯𝟎.𝟓.𝟎 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝! 🙌 The developers are happy to announce the release v0.5.0 of the optic design / simulation software OPOSSUM. Over the past four releases, many concepts and features have been worked out. Meanwhile, the software can already be used for simulating real-life optical models. However, since the software still lacks a real user interface (it’s more like an optics library) and file / data formats are changing rapidly, using the software for real projects is still cumbersome and requires familiarity with the Rust programming language. If you are, nevertheless, willing to test the software, feel free to do so. We are open for feedback and we would be happy and thankful for any feature request or bug report. All bugs / feature requests should be reported to our software repository. ➡ Read the full news here: https://lnkd.in/ercMNwSQ 💡 Within THRILL Project, a team of developers is working on OPOSSUM (hashtag#OpenSource hashtag#Optics Simulation System and Unified Modeler). The objective of OPOSSUM is the development of a common software platform for simulating various aspects of optical systems in a holistic approach. It should be particularly useful for simulating and designing large-size, high-energy / intensity laser systems. ➡ Learn more about #OPOSSUM: https://lnkd.in/esZJbxbS GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research

👉 Meet our next partner: The Laboratory for Laser Energetics of the University of Rochester The Omega Laser Facility at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics is the world’s largest laser system in an academic setting, comprised of the OMEGA and OMEGA EP Laser Systems. The 60-beam OMEGA Laser System focuses up to 30,000 joules of energy onto a target that measures less than 1 millimeter in diameter in approximately one billionth of a second. The OMEGA EP Laser Systems has four frequency-tripled, kilojoule-class, independently configurable National Ignition Facility (NIF)-scale beamlines, two of which can be compressed for short-pulse, petawatt-class operation. 👉 Meet our next partner: The international accelerator facility #FAIR, one of the largest research projects worldwide, is currently being built in #Darmstadt, Germany. FAIR will generate particle beams of a previously unparalleled intensity and quality. The variety of these particles will be unique: Ions of all the natural elements in the periodic table, as well as antiprotons, can be accelerated. The FAIR facility consists of a superconducting ring accelerator with a circumference of 1,100 meters, storage rings and experiment sites with several kilometers of beam line in total. The existing GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research accelerators will serve as the first acceleration stage.
