The fashion industry is one of the dirtiest industries that exist. The industry itself is responsible for roughly ten percent of GHG emissions, and fast fashion’s impact not only contributes to that percentage, but is the leading force. Today, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), ranking member of the House Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee, alongside Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.), announced the first-ever Congressional Slow Fashion Caucus to curb fast fashion pollution through climate-smart policies; a huge step in the fight against the climate crisis. This morning, the Members held a press conference to launch the platform and invited ThredUp's Chief Legal Officer Alon Rotem to deliver the opening remarks. “The launch of the Slow Fashion Caucus gives us a powerful new platform to forge ahead. Together we can drive the fashion policy agenda forward and change the incentive structures to benefit our shared planet and resources,” Alon said in his remarks. Thank you to the Congresswoman Pingree for inviting ThredUp to a part of this incredibly crucial platform, and to Rachel Seville Tashjian and The Washington Post for diving into what the Slow Fashion Caucus has set out to do.

Thank you Innovation Forum and Kelly A. Burton for having ThredUp's Chief Legal Officer Alon Rotem join Day 2 of the Sustainable Apparel and Textiles Conference in NYC. Alon shared his insights on where shoppers rank environmental causes on their priority list and whether their values make it past checkout, and how often those perceptions can change. It was a thought-provoking conversation and we were honored to be a part of it.

Eric Ries invited our CEO James Reinhart to be one of the first guests of his new podcast, The Eric Ries Show. Whether you're interested in fashion or not, this is a must-listen for anyone remotely interested in business, with insightful stories about the small wins, speedbumps, and learnings you encounter on the quest to build an enduring business.
Episode 2 of The Eric Ries Show drops today! My guest is James Reinhart, founder of the second-hand resale platform ThredUp. James started out as a teacher, an experience that made him sure he wanted to make a positive impact on the world just as much as he wanted to build a successful business. ThredUp checks both boxes. It's changing the way people think about filling (and emptying) their closets -- its mission is "to inspire the world to think secondhand first" -- and it also generated $80 million in revenue in the first quarter of this year. In our conversation, we covered this duality from a number of perspectives, including the company culture that makes it possible, the importance of choosing the right investors, why an ambitious mission brings many advantages, what it was like to go public, and why more people should be thinking about purpose and profit as complementary rather than at odds with each other. As James put it, "intrinsically good businesses are good for bottom lines and good for the world." Like most great businesses, ThredUp was born to address a market failure: Secondhand clothes. Today, the secondhand apparel market is exploding, projected to reach $350 billion globally by 2028. But it’s not without tensions in making the business and operating model work – and scale. Our CEO James Reinhart sat down with the team at World Retail Congress to share his POV on how the resale market has evolved and how ThredUp continues to disrupt the space 15 years after its founding. Listen in!👇
Episode 6 of the World Retail Podcast is out now! In this latest episode from our series, 'Disrupt or be Disrupted', Matt Clark, Partner and Managing Director, AlixPartners and Ian McGarrigle, Chairman of World Retail Congress, talk to James Reinhart the Co-Founder and CEO of ThredUp, the online resale platform for apparel, about how his drive is to disrupt fashion and force the industry to embrace the circular economy.
