Did you know: ...Until 1820s, the term “menopause” didn't even exist. Before then, "it" was referred to as: - “women’s hell,” - “green old age” and (drumroll, please) - “death of sex” Physicians in the 19th century also believed that receiving bad news could cause early menopause 🤯. Others thought that perimenopausal women were more susceptible to mental illnesses, like ‘morbid irrationality,’ ‘minor forms of hysteria’. Feels And now? How far have we come? According to this NYT article, perimenopause is described in medical journals as an “ill-defined time period”. Researchers raise alarms: we're living in the menopause management vacuum. Why so? No one medical specialty really “owns” treatment of perimenopausal and menopausal women, because the symptoms affect so many different systems and parts of the body. If men had to go through menopause, there would have been a cure. We deserve advocacy. We deserve options. We deserve a choice in how we age, through every stage of life. #menopause #perimenopause #womenshealth

Healthtech founder building women's health at the speed of AI.

Nothing gets the crowd going quite like menopause! Speaking at NewYorkBIO on women's digital health was a blast - and one of the most lively debates I've experienced on a panel - all sparked by a question from the audience: "Since we haven't had enough time to study the risks, do we really want to delay menopause?" My answer -- OF COURSE! This is like asking "Should we delay heart disease...or dementia?" (risks for both SKYROCKET when women hit menopause, by the way). Afterward, every woman over 40 came up to thank me for my comments, almost laughing (crying?) about the fact that it remains a question at all. If men went through menopause, there would already be cure (AND it would be covered by insurance), now there will be. This is an opportunity that shouldn’t even need to exist, and certainly shouldn’t be up for debate. Let's do the research, let's quantify the risks, and let's give women a choice in how they manage their own risks, health and otherwise, at every stage of life. What an amazing way to kick off my move back to NYC, joined by friends and industry leaders Harold Hess, CPA Keara S. Marissa Fayer Jennifer Hawks Bland Stephanie Wang FemHealth Ventures NewYorkBIO Colleen Costello and more. Thanks for the invitation and rockstar moderation Seth Mulrooney, CEPA®, CPWA® Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati! Women’s health entrepreneurs & advocates - if you haven’t signed yet, now is your chance! Deadline tomorrow! The Menopause Research and Equity Act 2023 was introduced to Congress to support much-needed reform in women’s health policy, from funding to reimbursement and more. By banding together, women's health companies can create meaningful progress on issues like raising growth capital, gathering and sharing data, navigating regulations and reimbursement, and upholding patient privacy. Did you know that women of reproductive health were banned from clinical trials until 1993? Women’s hormones and health have lacked adequate funding and research from the beginning, but we have the opportunity to change that. This bill represents a changing tide in how we address women’s health issues, especially menopause, which has been underfunded and under-researched for far too long. Thanks to Let's Talk Menopause and other incredible advocates in menopause, including Tamsen Fadal, Sharon Malone, Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz, MD, and so many others for bringing this to life. Please join in sharing our perspective with policymakers. We are asking fellow women's health entrepreneurs, CEOs, and experts to add your name and affiliation to this important letter to support funding, research, reimbursement and overall policy overhaul for women’s health. It takes less than 1 minute to sign here: https://lnkd.in/efVJ_72h
