Our mission is to relieve the misfortunes and promote the well being of humankind.

About us

Grounded in the lived examples of Tracy and Katherine McGregor, the McGregor Fund works to support and strengthen a safety net of essential resources and opportunities for vulnerable members of our community, particularly those experiencing sustained and concentrated poverty. We believe all human beings deserve access to these essential resources and opportunities, without which a healthy, fulfilled life is impossible. People living in poverty differ only insomuch as they are unable to pay for them. Working within the tri-county region of Metropolitan Detroit, we optimize our investments of grants and staff time to strengthen the safety net of essential resources for people in need.

A few weeks ago, I asked my team to share their “Why” stories with me. Why do they do this work? Where have they come from? The entry below is one of the responses. It’s long, especially for the aggressively get-to-the-point culture of social media. It also includes some triggering language.   I’ve created several highly abbreviated versions. Choosing the most impactful and colorful language. Sanitizing some of the scary and sad parts. Making it easier for you to take a quick bite and move along. But every time I look at those consumerized versions, it’s not my colleague staring back. It’s me. And this is not my story to tell. So, I'm giving it to you as it was given to me.   A lot of folks have clicked along to the next post on their feed already, and that’s ok. If you’re still here, I invite you to stay for a couple minutes longer and share in the journey. I think you will be moved by it. I have been.

From Kate Levin Markel, McGregor Fund President: "Robert has been a friend and mentor to so many of us – folks leading the work as well as his funder peers – which makes it a special honor to be named Black Executive Director Alliance of Detroit (BEDAD)’s Robert Thornton Philanthropic Partner for 2024. Thank you to BEDAD’s board, team, and members for everything you do, day in and day out! We’re inspired to answer to your collective example."

The Black Executive Directors Alliance of Detroit, better known as BEDAD, announced the Inaugural Executive Leadership Awards at its membership dinner last week. These awards serve 2 purposes: 1) To recognize critical actors in our community (BEDAD members, philanthropy, and systems, like schools, city, etc) who exemplify BEDAD's 5 values of commitment, responsibility, trustworthiness, integrity, and leadership and are champions to and partners with, the Black Executive Leadership community of Detroit. 2) We are blessed in this work to stand on the shoulders of the giants who preceded us. These awards were named after people who made things better for us in 2024 because of their work and the trails the cleared for today's executive leader. Charles Small, Annie Ellington, and Robert Thornton are people we should all remember, lift up, and understand the roles they played in our professional lives. Congrats to: Kimberly Johnson, Founder/CEO of Developing KIDS who received the Charles Small Executive of the Year award; Shuna K. Hayward, Vice President of Programs at Connect Detroit received the System Partner of the Year award; McGregor Fund was awarded the Robert Thornton Philanthropic Partner of the Year award. Congrats to all the winners for carrying the mantle of leadership for current and aspiring executive leaders across Metro Detroit, now, and into the future. Now let's go make it happen! #detroit #wearebedad #biggerthanme #Leadership #executiveleadershipsummit24

From Kate Levin Markel, President, McGregor Fund: “We were so honored by the presence of our clear-eyed, courageous partners, who came to northern Michigan to make plain the imperative of prioritizing well-being among nonprofit leaders and teams. We in philanthropy need to reconsider and upend the norms underlying our partner relationships, which contribute to burnout and turnover. No better than hearing it from the experts.” "Advancing Equity in Philanthropy by Prioritizing Nonprofit Wellness, Thriving, and Rest" panelists: ➡ Sarida Scott, Vice President, Program at The Skillman Foundation, Moderator ➡ Kelley Kuhn, President & CEO, Michigan Nonprofit Association ➡ Shamyle Dobbs, CEO, Michigan Community Resources ➡ Allandra Bulger, Executive Director, Co.act Detroit ➡ Heidi Alcock, Director of Grant Development & Communications, McGregor Fund We also thank the 2023 and 2024 McGregor Fund Miller Fellows who contributed to the video we shared during the Council of Michigan Foundations session: 📌 Maha Freij, President & CEO, ACCESS - Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services 📌 Camille Proctor, Founder & Executive Director, The Color of Autism Foundation 📌 Shamyle Dobbs, CEO, Michigan Community Resources Our Miller Fellows have asked us to amplify, as an urgent matter of racial equity and justice, our advocacy for rest for nonprofit leaders. This is part of our initial response, with much more ahead.

From Shamyle Dobbs, CEO of Michigan Community Resources: "In the nonprofit sector, where many are significantly underpaid, overworked, and taking on huge issues that humanity is facing - we need to drastically shift from a charity mindset to one of systemic transformation. Sitting on a panel with these incredible women was a powerful testament to the commitment of this sector to transform itself for the better. Being in a room with philanthropic leaders willing to disrupt the status quo and interrogate factors leading to burnout and ways to invest differently was refreshing. This is just the beginning. More to come." Sending our heartfelt gratitude to our panelists -- Allandra Bulger, Executive Director of Co.act Detroit and Shamyle Dobbs, CEO of Michigan Community Resources -- for sharing their time and wisdom with us and our funding peers at last week's Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) conference session we hosted: “Advancing Equity in Philanthropy by Prioritizing Nonprofit Wellness, Thriving, and Rest." Many thanks to Kelley J. Kuhn, President & CEO of the Michigan Nonprofit Association for her panel participation and Sarida Scott, Vice President, Program at The Skillman Foundation, for moderating our discussion. Our Miller Fellows have asked us to amplify, as an urgent matter of racial equity and justice, our advocacy for rest for nonprofit leaders. This is part of our initial response, with much more ahead.

"Adopting a mental health mindset means that a nonprofit organization’s well-being and mental health support for staff is a central part of its capacity. A mental health mindset acknowledges that with the funder/nonprofit power dynamic, we can be the cause of burnout and anxiety. A mental health mindset centers love — the love of humanity that is both the meaning of the word philanthropy and the aspiration of what we can contribute when we listen deeply and offer support in our interactions with individuals, organizations, and the sector as a whole." - Beth Brown, Managing Director, Mental Health and Well-Being, Arthur M.
