#InTheNews Op-Ed: Action Needed to Sustain Hospital-Based Programs that Prevent Violence New Jersey, like many other states, has strategically enhanced the community violence-intervention ecosystem to address the impact of violence in neighborhoods. Gov. Phil Murphy has pointed to this public health approach as a key factor in reducing shootings in 2023 to the lowest number in nearly 15 years. Organizations like The Paterson Healing Collective, a hospital-based violence intervention program, is making a real impact on the city's hardest-hit communities by providing essential services like GED assistance, job readiness training, and housing. Championed by the The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI) for nearly 15 years, these programs connect those at highest risk with support, both in hospitals and through ongoing community services. To ensure the long-term sustainability of these evidence-based interventions, it is just as important to diversify their funding streams to include more stable sources. The new bill currently under consideration by the Legislature would enable Medicaid coverage and reimbursement for violence prevention services and smartly takes advantage of the opportunity to utilize federal matching funds, which will cover 50% of the costs associated with this benefit. We urge lawmakers to pass this legislation now to ensure its Medicaid program serves as a steady funding source for evidence-based violence intervention programs, providing the trauma-informed care they need and the opportunity to thrive they deserve. #InTheNews: Op-Ed: Action needed to sustain hospital-based programs that prevent violence. Today’s op-ed urges state lawmakers to pass legislation for Medicaid coverage and reimbursement for these critical programs. The piece was co-authored by Jermaine Belcher of the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention and Dr. James Pruden of St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. Hospital-based violence intervention programs, like the Paterson Healing Collective, provide critical support to those impacted by violence, helping them heal and thrive. Sustained funding is essential for their success. Bill S-1407/A-4201 will enable Medicaid to cover these services, leveraging federal funds to cover 50% of the costs. This is a powerful call to pass this legislation and make New Jersey the eighth state to ensure Medicaid serves as a steady funding source for violence intervention programs. Watch and share this inspiring video highlighting the vital work of the National Compadres Network, a grantee of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education (powered by The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention). The National Compadres Network (NCN) recognizes that individuals, neighborhoods, and communities most affected by violence play a critical role in finding solutions. NCN creates spaces for open communication and truth-sharing, conducts qualitative research, and works toward systemic change to foster more purposeful lives for all. The grant from the Center will help NCN and collaborators the Hope and Heal Fund and the Urban Peace Institute to pilot and evaluate the CVI Fellowship Program. This program supports community violence interventionists – many of whom are people of color, formerly gang-affiliated, and victims/perpetrators of gun violence – as they work to advance healing in their communities. The Center has invested nearly $7 million in community-led research, innovative health approaches, and promising interventions to protect the health and safety of our most affected communities.
