The recent WCCI 2024 Open Forum on AI Governance in Yokohama, Japan, brought together researchers, policymakers, and leaders from around the world, underscoring the value of international cooperation in #AIgovernance. We were honored to have a colleague in attendance, hearing from experts such as Yoichi Iida from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and Koichi Takahashi of RIKEN and the AI Alignment Network. The event also featured a keynote address by Akiko Murakami of the newly established Japan AI Safety Institute, which aims to facilitate collaboration and promote AI innovation while mitigating risks.

Hot off the press: The EU AI Act was published today. You can read the full text in the EU’s official journal ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/euGfjvqx As the first horizontal law on artificial intelligence and general-purpose AI models, the EU AI Act addresses the protection of health and safety as well as fundamental rights through a solid enforcement framework. This is a momentous step towards better governance of AI that serves the public interest.

Alongside other AI governance leaders, our colleague Amanda Leal recently spoke at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 20 Forum High-Level Event about leveraging policy mechanisms and regulation to increase transparency, accountability, inclusivity, and civil society participation in AI development and deployment 👏 #WSIS2024
Evidence is clear: #AI is no longer just a tool mainly informing or supporting decisions, but increasingly a content creator in its own right. A report from Europol estimates that as much as 90% of online content may be synthetically generated by 2026, fact that can have (and is already having!) profound implications on the information society. Since the adoption of UNESCO’s Recommendation on #AIEthics, we have been working tirelessly to transform what has thus far been principally a technological debate into a constructive multi-stakeholders’ societal conversation about the future we all want for AI, also #GenAI. Last week I had the pleasure to moderate a content-rich, engaging panel at the World Summit of the Information Society #WSIS2024, featuring Fadi Daou of Globethics; Amanda Leal of The Future Society; Ricardo Baptista Leite, M.D. of HealthAI; and Ashutosh Chadha, of Microsoft as speakers. The event brought together visionaries, policymakers, and tech experts from around the globe to explore the ethical dimensions of the Information Society and the impact of #AI on it. #WSIS #DigitalInclusion #AIforGood Gabriela Ramos
