Today is Anti-Slavery Day. In our ongoing commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring ethical supply chains, today we hosted our Quarterly Virtual Convening for the Taskforce focused on the "P" of Protection. Cardell Morant, Director of the Department of Homeland Security Center for Countering Human Trafficking (CCHT), kicked off our discussion as our featured speaker. The CCHT's mission is to advance law enforcement efforts, protect victims, and enhance prevention strategies, aligning DHS' capabilities to fight human trafficking and forced labor. Together, we discussed the vital topic of supply chain legislation, multidisciplinary teams, and trauma informed approaches to interviews. Orphanage traffickers target children who are uniquely susceptible to trafficking due to: 👉 poverty 👉 lack of access to education or other services, or 👉 other family crises. False promises of support, good education and other opportunities are often made to families during recruitment to entice them to relinquish their children. Unknown to most volunteers and donors, many of the children in these orphanages have at least one living parent and other living kin who often love them and do not realize that they are being put up for adoption. The Interparliamentary Taskforce on Human Trafficking Working Group on Orphanage Trafficking is working on a project in preparation for the Inter-Parliamentary Union convening in October which will be presented by Senator Linda Reynolds. In preparation for this one of our working group members, Nick Evans, from Hopeland, has prepared this coalition letter in support of these anti-orphanage trafficking efforts at the IPU with the input of fellow working group members, and it is now being included in a Global Citizen advocacy campaign. So far there are about 9500 signatures, and we are asking you to sign as well.
