Turning the carbon problem into the carbon solution. Extinction ends here.

About us

At AIR COMPANY we are paving a pathway to global decarbonization by transforming CO₂ into endless resources via industrial scale applications. Working with nature, rather than against it, our proprietary AIRMADE™ Technology mimics photosynthesis to transform carbon dioxide and water via renewable energy into carbon-negative chemicals and fuels. We have commercial partnerships with airlines including JetBlue and Virgin Atlantic, amongst others, and have been awarded multiple government contracts from NASA and the United States Department of Defense. AIR COMPANY has received industry recognition through awards such as Time Best Inventions, Fast Company World Changing Ideas and the XPRIZE for Carbon Removal. We are proudly headquartered in New York City and co-founded by Gregory Constantine (CEO) and Dr. Stafford Sheehan (CTO). Our team spans a diverse group of world-leading experts in chemistry, engineering and technological development and deployment. AIR COMPANY is backed by capital partners aligned with the company’s mission to boldly transform industry including the US Department of Defense, NASA, Toyota Ventures, JetBlue Ventures and Carbon Direct.

Today, we’re excited to announce that we have raised $69 million in our Series B funding round led by Avfuel, a leading global supplier of aviation fuel and services. The round was also supported by Lowercarbon Capital, IQT (In-Q-Tel), Alaska Airlines, Connecticut Innovations, Duncan Aviation, Jet Support Services, Inc. (JSSI), and the owners of Sheltair, among others. Existing investors Carbon Direct Capital, JetBlue Ventures and Toyota Ventures also participated in the financing. With this raise, we will further accelerate the development of our proprietary AIRMADE™ Technology to meet the increasing demand for clean fuels in both commercial and government sectors. This will include massive advancements toward large-scale production of our fully formulated AIRMADE® SAF, a CO2-derived sustainable aviation fuel. We’re looking forward to continuing our journey of paving the way to global energy security by transforming CO2 into a valuable resource. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eby9x4Z5

Serving as a technical expert on the International Civil Aviation Organization Fuels Task Group on behalf of AIR COMPANY is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Last week, we wrapped up the last meeting of an intensive three-year cycle, and it’s inspiring to see the amount of progress we were able to make during this time, especially on eSAF. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with so many dedicated technical experts and government representatives from around the world. Rapid progress is possible through collaboration when everyone is working towards the same goal of decarbonization. I’ve never felt more excited about the future eFuels and its role in the clean energy transition! A special thank you for this productive CAEP cycle to Bruno Silva Anna Oldani Daniel Brousse Rivas Matteo Prussi Robert Malina Jon Albert Obnamia Kristin Lewis Florian Allroggen Glenn Johnston

Our Director of Regulatory Affairs and Quality in Aviation, Mark Rumizen, went on the ASTM International Standards Impact podcast to talk about all things alternate fuels, otherwise known as sustainable fuels. “Our focus [at AIR COMPANY] is on a drop-in fuel because there are 10 thousand big airliners out here. The economic capital tied up in those airliners is enormous, and the design life of an airliner is 30-40 years. So the fleet is not going to change—that legacy fleet—so you need a fuel that fits that legacy fleet. You can't change the legacy fleet to operate on a new fuel, and that's what brings us back to what I said: drop-in fuels. So that's why aviation is really unique. When we talk about alternative fuels or sustainable fuels for aviation, the hardest thing to grasp is that if you put them in a beaker and analyze them, they would be exactly the same [as conventional jet] fuel.” Listen to the full episode: https://lnkd.in/eJfWam7z

“[Our consumer] products were really great educational tools for us. They allowed our teams to continue to work on technology…and monetize our research and development while we scaled…to bring us to where we are today—transitioning the technology to be focused on the future of fuel, namely aviation.” — Gregory Constantine Leaders on a Mission featured our co-founder and CEO on their latest podcast episode, “Carbon Conversion & Sustainable Space Exploration: The New Era of Aviation.” Listen here: https://lnkd.in/e3yjXzrP

This summer, AIR COMPANY had the opportunity to partner with Black Girl Environmentalist on the inaugural Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship. Named after the mother of environmental justice, the Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship is a 10-week paid climate internship program focusing on increasing opportunities for emerging leaders of color to learn about, engage with and enter the environmental and climate sectors with adequate funding, mentorship, and community building. The program included weekly professional development workshops, an on-site mentor, networking opportunities with environmental leaders and an end-of-summer retreat. AIR COMPANY served as the partner host for Semawit Ayele. She joined our team as an intern in the Innovation Team, working out of our lab space in Brooklyn. There, she was immersed in various projects related to converting CO2 to sustainable aviation fuels, including catalysis and fuel development. Semawit also participated in the AIR Scholars program, our annual summer high school internship program, as a mentor for this year's cohort. Semawit came to AIR COMPANY with great enthusiasm and a desire to learn about our technology. She demonstrated exceptional dedication and hard work. She was an excellent addition to our team, helping drive projects forward by working alongside our scientists and technicians. Read more about this program: https://lnkd.in/eifwi9YE

Our AIR Scholars program was created to empower future leaders to see climate change and mitigation solutions through a broader lens—one that centers on environmental justice. We’re thrilled to have just recently wrapped our third year of the program, during which nine brilliant Scholars explored the relationship between air quality, health, environmental justice and sustainable fuel production. Our third Cohort of students from the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment (BASE) and the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media (IAM), engaged hands-on with environmental science. They built and deployed ‘AIR Q’ monitors, which were used to detect primary air pollutants and assess the impacts of pollution in environmental justice communities. To validate the accuracy of their AIR Q monitors, the Scholars compared data from their sensor stationed at BASE to public air quality sensor data at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. These monitors will continue to collect data at partner schools during the fall semester, producing more robust data before publication and allowing more students to participate in this community-based research. From literature review to data analysis and air sensor programming, the Scholars developed a portfolio of valuable skills that will support them in their personal and professional trajectories. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to work with these future climate leaders and look forward to completing our co-authored, peer-reviewed paper with them in the coming months.

Today, there is a family of chemical compounds that are classified as alcohols, but ethanol is the first alcohol to be discovered by humans. It is the chemical we unknowingly reference when we use the word ‘alcohol’ in our daily lives, and its widespread application makes it one of the most ubiquitous compounds on the planet. Ethanol is utilized across industries like food and beverage, medicine, fuel development and beyond. At AIR COMPANY, ethanol has always been a core part of our story. Manufactured from only CO2, green hydrogen and renewable energy, we’re paving a new way forward from its fermented past. In our latest white paper, “The eponymous ethyl alcohol,” published in Nature Chemistry, we dive into the historical context of ethanol and how it’s produced, its role in human innovation, and how modern achievements can limit the climate impact of ethanol production and disrupt supply chains in the future.
