In continued celebration of July Disability Pride Month, we are sharing a great blog that includes some additional resources for accessibility and accommodations, a round-up of places to visit throughout the year and a very important survey that’s been created in collaboration with partners from the disability community. The Trustees is committed to learning, implementing, and increasing the accessibility of our properties and programs. We want to hear from you, our members, visitors, and guests. Celebrating and protecting the distinctive charms of Massachusetts. For everyone.
About us
Founded by landscape architect Charles Eliot in 1891, The Trustees has, for more than 125 years, been a catalyst for important ideas, endeavors, and progress in Massachusetts. As a steward of distinctive and dynamic places of both historic and cultural value, The Trustees is the nation’s first preservation and conservation organization, and its landscapes and landmarks continue to inspire discussion, innovation, and action today as they did in the past. We are a nonprofit supported by members, friends, and donors and our more than 115 sites are destinations for residents, members, and visitors alike, welcoming millions of guests annually. www.thetrustees.org.

The July full moon, also known as the Buck Moon, occurs on July 21, at 6:17 a.m. EDT. The full moon shares the evening sky with Mercury, which will be at its greatest apparent distance from the sun that day. Moonset is at 5:29 a.m. that day in New York City, but farther south the moment of full phase occurs before then. The name "Buck Moon" originates from Native American traditions, referring to the time of year when male deer, or bucks, begin to grow their new antlers. On the night of the full moon, just after sunset (which is at 8:21 p.m. in New York), one will be able to see Mercury, which reaches its greatest eastern elongation — the maximum apparent distance from the sun — at 11:37 p.m. EDT. The planet sets at 9:34 p.m., so it won't be very high in the sky; it will only be 5 degrees above the western horizon by 9 p.m. But careful observations after sunset might allow you to see it before then. Do not try to use any optical aid to see it until the sun is below the horizon, however; observing any objects close to the sun is dangerous because even split-second exposure to sunlight through binoculars or a telephoto lens can cause permanent damage to your retinas. On today’s edition of Trustees Hidden Gems, we introduce you to… Cormier Woods in Uxbridge! Cormier Woods lies within the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, a designated area extending from Worcester to Providence that celebrates the historical and cultural importance of the river and the birthplace of America’s Industrial Revolution. Easy to moderate-intensity trails wind through open meadow and along stone walls, opening up a quintessential 1800s New England agricultural landscape and small-scale farmstead, replete with an historic house, barn, and a blueberry patch that ripens in late summer. Plan your visit: Five miles of connected loop trails pass through easy to moderate terrain, including pastures, woodlands, and a boulder field. Pass beneath evergreens and hardwood species including oaks, maple, and birch. On the one-and-a-half-mile loop trail leading toward the reservation’s northwest border, look for groves of 80-to-100-foot white pines. This property is FREE to all and open year-round, sunrise to sunset. Dogs are permitted to be off leash if under voice control at all times. Please remove their waste properly. Mountain biking is permitted except where posted. Cormier Woods parking can be found at 217 Chapin St. in Uxbridge. There is parking near the barn. #TheTrustees #CormierWoods #UxbridgeMA #LesserKnownProperties #SpecialPlaces #Nature #Explore #Outdoor #Landscape #Accessibility [Description: Photos of various areas of Cormier Woods in Uxbridge MA.]

Name that View! Do you know what Trustees property this photo was taken from? Bonus Points if you can name the body of water seen from this view! Hint: The water seen here is a public reservoir (so please take care to protect this critical resource by not swimming or wading, and do not allow dogs to wade or swim in the water either). #TheTrustees #NameThatView #BeautifulVista #Massachusetts #WhereAreWe #BeautifulVista #Lake 📷: Nick Colleen Fiorello #Accessibility [Description: Photo of a beautiful lake vista in Massachusetts.]

Lynn Murray our Director of DBIE Programs & Partnerships recently sat down with our partner, the Dorchester Food Co-op @dorchesterfood_coop, to talk about their mission and our partnership. Dorchester Food Co-op is more than just a grocery store. They challenge the traditional food system by building a community and worker-owned asset that nourishes, employs, and reinvests in the local community. Food co-ops are owned by their members and a great way to support the local economy because they tend to purchase from local farms and reinvest in the community through job opportunities! We sat down with them in our most recent blog, which you can read here (or see our link in bio): https://lnkd.in/eQF3DHT2 #TheTrustees #DorchesterMA #FoodCoop #DorchesterFoodCoop #Community #MemberOwned #BostonMA #SpecialPlaces #Partnership #Accessibility [Description: Photos from the Dorchester Food Co-op.]
