The Southeast Asia Exchange

Education Management

For Southeast Asian students, by Southeast Asian students.

About us

The Southeast Asia Exchange aims to create space both for greater cross-cultural dialogue between Southeast Asian youths, and for more critical engagement with issues in the region. Founded in 2021, the Exchange leads a program for high school students from across the region every year. Participants in the program engage with prominent professional, academic, and creative figures involved in Southeast Asia, with the aim of encouraging greater exploration of, and deeper reflection on, the region. The program culminates in a Capstone Conference held virtually, where students present a project on a theme related to Southeast Asia of their choosing. Over the last three years, the program has brought together over 750 students across cities and villages in 10 Southeast Asian countries — from Sabah in Malaysia, to Makassar in Indonesia, to Cebu in the Philippines, to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, and beyond. Our goal is for students to leave the program more informed on, engaged with, and excited about both the history and culture of the region, and its forward potential.

  • Panel 6: Regional and National Education in Southeast Asia 📝 History is not simply a matter of factual truths, but one complicated by the politics of ideology. In Southeast Asia, the production of history is laden by questions of what, who, how and why. Acknowledging these complexities compels us to re-examine how history is taught, with a view to developing a deeper, more holistic understanding of our past. Specifically, there is a growing need to situate the study of history within a regional and global context; account for marginalised perspectives; and push for pedagogical reform. Civil society remains integral to producing multivocal histories, enriching discourse and shaping how (and what) history is passed down. Swipe for more! To wrap things up, our Capstone Conference will take place on Saturday, April 20. Stay tuned for exciting projects from our participants! 🌟 #southeastasia #education #seaexchange

  • Panel 5: Interfaith Understanding and Plurality 🤲 SEA is home to a diverse mix of ethnicities, religions, and cultures that contribute to its immense diversity. However, these unique dynamics may beget misunderstanding within and between countries. In order to maintain harmony and uphold regional solidarity, we must strive beyond mere tolerance to build mutual understanding and respect. In this panel, we heard from domain experts about the historical origins of racial and ethnic segregation, particularly colonialism, the complex interactions between state and ethnic identity, and the role that education systems have to play in fostering interfaith understanding. The panelists also cautioned against importing Western narratives of social cohesion and emphasised the need for SEA-specific solutions that take into consideration intergenerational differences and contemporary realities (digitalisation, climate change, religious shifts, etc.). Swipe for highlights from the session! Our final panel will be held on Saturday, April 13, and it is titled “National & Regional Education in Southeast Asia”. See you there! ✨ #southeastasia #education #seaexchange

  • Panel 4: The Role of Startups in the Healthcare Scene in Southeast Asia 🩺🏥 The last decade has witnessed increased innovation in healthcare in Southeast Asia. Coupled with the broader emergence of healthtech start-ups, the regional healthcare landscape is poised for significant growth and advancement. Bringing together perspectives from healthcare entrepreneurship, medical anthropology, and policy research, our panelists engaged in a wide-ranging conversation spanning differences in healthcare systems within the region, the emergent role of new technologies in the space, and the sociocultural and political factors that impact how healthcare is both sought out and delivered in the region. Ideas that particularly stood out to us were on the need for unifying public and private financing to comprehensively deliver healthcare services, and the need to embed healthcare services in community spaces where there are higher levels of trust. Thank you to Mr. Sheji Ho, Dr. Ann Hui Ching, and Dr. Phua Kai Hong for joining us at the panel. Swipe to see what they shared! #southeastasia #education #seaexchange

Panel 3: Digitization of SEA Heritage Sites The preservation of physical heritage is important in SEA because it forms the bedrock of our shared identity. With heritage sites increasingly under threat from natural disasters, over-tourism, and development, there have been growing efforts to digitize the sites for archival, conservation, and education purposes. Last weekend, our panelists, Dr. Mitch Hendrickson, Dr. Johannes WIDODO, and Dr. David Ocón, delved into what "heritage" means for SEA, gave an overview of the range of tools and technologies currently being used for digitalization, and discussed present challenges of these efforts. They advocated the need for data openness and transparency, accessibility and involvement of local communities, and the power of citizen-led initiatives. Swipe for highlights from the session. Coming up next, our panel on “The Role of Startups in Public Health” will be happening March 9th, Saturday, see you there! #southeastasia #education #seaexchange

Panel 2: Fight or Flight: Governing Climate Change-Induced Migration in SEA Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges of our time, compelling both communities and wildlife alike to migrate in search of safer sanctuaries. Southeast Asia is particularly vulnerable to the negative effects wrought by such change, and the region’s unique vulnerability to climate threats necessitates more urgent, critical inquiry into how we can best respond. Last week’s conversation with Mr. Shaq Koyok, Dr. Fithriyyah Iskandar, MD, and Dr. Pei Palmgren, spanned topics including internal and transnational migration and the migration of indigenous communities. The speakers ultimately coalesced on the need for equitable, inclusive, and multi-faceted solutions that are sensitive to the diverse voices and interests on the ground. Swipe to learn more about the panel and stay tuned for our next panel on February 24th,  “Digitization of Southeast Asian Heritage Sites”! #southeastasia #education #seaexchange

Panel 1: Modernity in Traditional and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art 🎨 The developments of the 20th century - from the occurrence of World War II, to the end of colonisation, to the influx of Western influences - initiated a broad range of sociocultural changes in the region. Many of these changes filtered into the local art scene, leading to an evolution in the art forms practised today. As we grapple with this evolution, the twin questions of what modernity looks like for Southeast Asian art, and how this modernity might interface with tradition, naturally arise. Thank you to our amazing speakers, Dr. Vipash Purichanont, Dr. Miguel Escobar Varela, Mr. eddin khoo, and Mr. Tintoy chuo for sharing about SEA traditions and culture, Wayang Kulit, art curation and more. Swipe to read about what our students learnt and what they thought of the session! Our next panel, “Fight or Flight: Governing Climate Change-Induced Migration in SEA” will be happening on Feb 3, Saturday, see you there! #southeastasia #education #seaexchange
