Have you ever wondered how Tunnel Boring Machines get their names? In 2022, a 7.4 m diameter #Robbins EPB named ‘Alice’ completed a 2.5 km long tunnel toward Trudeau Airport in Montreal, QC, Canada: https://lnkd.in/g3Z6QK8E. The machine was named in honor of Alice Evelyn Wilson, the first woman professional geologist employed by the Geological Survey of Canada. In 2023 she was honored with the naming of a new mineral, alicewilsonite-(YCe). Congrats to the Afcons-Sam India Consortium on the fourth intermediate breakthrough of #Robbins EPB TBM ‘Yamuna’ at India’s Agra Metro! The machine completed tunneling in late June, having bored more than 500 m between Agra College and SN Medical College in soft clay strata in less than three months. This year’s #WTC2024 in Shenzhen, China couldn’t come at a better time. We’re celebrating 30 years of TBM tunneling at #Robbins China and look forward to commemorating the occasion at the first WTC in the country. In the past three decades we’ve bored epic water diversion tunnels, urban metro projects, mountainous hydroelectric tunnels, and more. We dove into the archive to take a look at one of our largest, most impactful tunnels in China: The Yellow River Water Diversion Project, consisting of multiple tunnels totaling over 100 km in length to bring water to chronically dry areas of Shanxi Province. Four Robbins Double Shield TBMs took on different sections of the tunnel between 1999 and 2001, boring in sedimentary rock with karst formations at rates of up to 1,822 m in one month – a world record for 4 to 5 m diameter TBMs that still stands.
