Thank you to everyone who attended our annual New Philanthropic Leaders' Pitch-In Party last Thursday at the Energy Innovation Center in Uptown Pittsburgh. This year’s cohort chose to focus on small and midsize nonprofits in the Pittsburgh region that provide transitional housing opportunities for women of color and their families and we were thrilled to welcome HEARTH - North Hills Affordable Housing CEO Christy Pietryga, Naomi's Place President and CEO Dr. Regina Holley and SisTers PGH Founder and Executive Director Ciora Thomas to introduce their nonprofit organizations. $38,000 of pooled funding went to the three nonprofits from the cohort, and an additional $1,500 was distributed to the trio from the event and additional donations at the party. Congratulations to everyone on another terrific event. (Photos by Lamar Davis.)

We are thrilled to have you "on Board" as well, Tracy Certo. We know the invaluable experience and insight you will bring to our foundation after your tremendous success in publishing, most recently the founding of NEXTpittsburgh. Welcome!
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve joined the Board of Directors at The Pittsburgh Foundation. When I sold NEXTpittsburgh in December 2020, my first step was to open a donor-advised fund at TPF, the best way I knew to give back to the community that played such a crucial role in NEXT’s success. In 2022, I had the opportunity to participate in a Giving Circle focused on affordable housing, where we collaborated over five meetings to understand the nonprofit landscape and awarded $75k to several deserving organizations. Now, as a Board member, I’m excited to delve deeper into the important work TPF does to enhance Pittsburgh. I’m truly honored to be part of one of the oldest and largest community foundations in our country and so look forward to contributing to its impactful mission.

We continue to be proud partners with FISA Foundation and The Heinz Endowments for these important convenings around equity for all.
Earlier this week, FISA Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, and The Pittsburgh Foundation hosted the Fall 2024 RACE DISABILITY Convening for our grantees and partners in southwestern PA, our second-in person convening of the year for the RACE DISABILITY initiative. Disability advocate Patrick Cokley from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) was the keynote speaker, presenting an overview of disability rights history and sharing how he has incorporated tenets of disability justice into his work at RWJF. After the keynote, participants discussed challenges they encounter in advancing intersectional equity and took time to brainstorm solutions with their colleagues. It was a great opportunity to build new connections and validate our shared commitment to the work. Thank you to Common Cause Consultants for facilitating the convening. And thank you to everyone who attended! We look forward to the next convening!

"Repositioning Black life as intrinsically valuable in the eyes of the medical community isn’t easy because it hasn’t been a priority until recently. Pittsburgh’s philanthropic community has taken notice and is partnering with reformers determined to make a difference." Among them is four-time Emmy Award-winning director/photographer Emmai Alaquiva, a Foundation Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh grantee. (Tony Norman’s NEXTpittsburgh column is underwritten by our foundation as part of our efforts to support writers and commentators who cover communities of color.)
