During Men’s Health Month, we recognize the importance of prioritizing mental health care to help prevent diseases and improve overall health. Howard Dinh, MD, FACC, TPMG Chair of Cardiology talks about the mind-heart connection. A 2023 study that analyzed nearly 2 million people found that those with depression, compared to those without, had increased relative risks of death from congestive heart failure by 220%, a heart attack by 28%, and death from all causes by 43%. Read more to better understand the tremendous impact of mental health challenges on overall health. #MensHealthMonth https://lnkd.in/gGRmF_aX

Patient-centered physician-led innovation has been at the core of Kaiser Permanente since our founding nearly 80 years ago. Dr. Sidney R. Garfield, the physician founder of Kaiser Permanente, was a surgeon and visionary always on the next frontier of medicine—from pioneering prepayment in the 1930s to being one of the first to embrace the computer as a tool to improve medicine in the 1960s. The Sidney R. Garfield, MD Exceptional Contribution Award recognizes exemplary members of The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. who embody this legacy. This year, we celebrate: Jitesh Vasadia, MD, for improving patient health through an innovative method to better track and manage a common heart medication, amiodarone, which is used for treating cardiac rhythm disorders. Bonnie Quiroz, MD, and Gregg Gayre, MD for revolutionizing how our doctors use digital imaging to diagnose, treat and monitor eye conditions to prevent vision loss, setting a standard lauded by the American Academy of Ophthalmology as the model in the field. Gregory Marelich, MD for pioneering a TeleCritical Care program that helps ICU patients and their families rest easier with round-the-clock life-saving response from physicians and nurses. We applaud Drs. Vasadia, Gayre, Quiroz, and Marelich and look forward to seeing their continued work to improve health and care for their communities. #KPProud https://lnkd.in/gkQ4ipcN

Thank you to TPMG’s own Sunil Bhopale, MD, APIC, in Redwood City, for sparking curiosity among Cub Scout Pack 65 and helping them see a potential opportunity in emergency medicine. When we show younger generations the joy and excitement of medicine and patient care, we create a workforce of physician leaders who continue to move our health care system forward for the better. https://lnkd.in/g2syst4N

What better way to celebrate Women’s Health Month than by making women’s physical and mental health a priority? Data show that women have different levels of risk and health care needs, but unfortunately, gender bias remains in health care. Women have a higher risk of stroke than men do. And nearly 80% of people living in the United States with osteoporosis are women. As physicians, we can advance women’s health by focusing on prevention and care management, forming trusted relationships with our patients, and collaborating among care teams and specialties to expand services—efforts that are already ingrained in Permanente Medicine’s core values. #NWHM #WomensHealth

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month is a time to celebrate the rich diversity and contributions of AAPI communities, and to recognize our responsibility to foster inclusion for our workforce and deliver high-quality, compassionate, and equitable care. There is a strong legacy of Asian American and Pacific Islander contributions in our organization’s history. One noted physician is Beatrice Lei, MD, a remarkable pediatrician who emigrated from Shantou, China, to San Francisco in the late 1930s. Dr. Lei’s story is one of resilience and trailblazing spirit — she made history as the first female and first Asian physician to become a partner in 1948, paving the way for countless others to follow. In the spirit of this year’s theme, “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation,” TPMG honors our physician leaders who have shaped Permanente Medicine, and is proud to support and uplift AAPI voices who make up our workforce. #AAPIHeritageMonth #AAPI https://lnkd.in/gtprhKKz
