The lab of Chris Walsh of Boston Children’s and the The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group Discovery Center for Human Brain Evolution, has found that a third or more of the fastest-evolving regions of the human genome (known as human accelerated regions or HARs) are active during brain development, and that mutations in HARs contribute to autism among families with shared ancestry. Walsh, Ryan Doan, Ph.D., DABMGG, FACMG Taehwan Shin, Janet Song and other colleagues now extend the HARS–autism link in a larger cohort of smaller families with more diverse ancestry, mainly from the U.S. They also find that mutations in non-coding regions of the genome contribute to autism risk as well. 👇

Currently in order to study large amounts of protein from individual cells, you have to mechanically or chemically break the cells open. What if we could extract proteins without muddling the very cell we are trying to study? Allen Distinguished Investigator Gary CH Mo is addressing this big problem with a small #FrontierScience approach - developing "nano-scalpels" that can extract proteins via tiny molecular biopsies from inside cells. Our Allen Discovery Center for Neuroimmune Interactions at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai descended upon Seattle, Washington last week to join the many remarkable Allen Discovery Centers and Distinguished Investigators who are a diverse group of leaders in #science and #technology who are literally creating new ways to do and think about science. We got to hear about amazing science from the Allen Institute and their new #initiatives in tackling #computational #biology with amazing people like Andy Hickl who are helping to transform #medicine via #AI #LLM #machinelearning. We were grateful for the opportunity to speak about how #peripheral #neuroimmunology is one of the most #transformative fields of #biology and how we are fundamentally revisiting what #innovation in science.
