Today we have penned an open letter to #TimFarron MP expressing our concern about sewage dumping on the British shellfish industry. We hope that together we can make lasting change: https://lnkd.in/ewShbV-b #openletter #sewage #nativeoysters #shellfish

Pioneering Oyster Restoration in the Humber Estuary! 🦪 Wilder Humber is making waves with a first-of-its-kind restoration method in the UK! The initiative is trialling "remote setting" to restore native European flat oysters in the Humber estuary, once home to vibrant oyster reefs now devastated by overfishing, pollution, and disease. This innovative technique will reduce transportation stress, cut costs, and increase survival rates of oysters—setting a new standard for restoration efforts. Over the next 5 years, 500,000 oysters will be reintroduced with hopes of building a biogenic oyster reef. Oyster reefs filter water, create marine habitats, and protect coastlines. With partners like The Nature Conservancy and The Oyster Restoration Company, this ambitious project aims to revive the Humber's biodiversity and safeguard its ecosystems for future generations. “Together, we are paving the way for further native oyster restoration projects, ensuring a healthier and more resilient environment for the future,” says Dr. Nik Sachlikidis, CEO of The Oyster Restoration Company. Stay tuned as we work to bring back these ecosystem heroes to the Humber and beyond! 💚 Read more about how remote setting works: https://lnkd.in/e-zuZSUg #WilderHumber is delivered by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, in partnership with Ørsted.

The first barrier to native oyster restoration at scale is large volumes of disease-free larvae, which we at The Oyster Restoration Company are resolving. The second barrier is logistics. Today, we are trialling a new remote setting for the first time at Spurn Point alongside Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and The Nature Conservancy. This method is set to overcome the logistics barrier, and together we will restore native reefs at scale. #Sustainability #WilderHumber #OysterRestoration

Big thanks to NORA for highlighting this achievement! Our oysters have successfully journeyed from Northern Scotland to Helgoland, Germany, showcasing the dedication and hard work of both teams at Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research and The Oyster Restoration Company. This accomplishment involved thorough disease testing, challenging logistics, and navigating new border crossings. This pilot is set to support the future of restoration efforts across the UK and Europe. 🦪 If you're looking to kick-start your own project in the UK or Europe, please get in touch about spat and spat-on-shell production. Happy National Oyster Day! What better way to celebrate than with our friends at the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust by committing to reintroduce over half a million native oysters as part of the Wilder Humber project! We think oysters deserve more than just one day in the spotlight as they play a crucial role in creating habitats for countless marine species, and this collaboration is all about bringing back the rich biodiversity to create a healthier, more resilient Humber estuary. Together, we can make a real difference! #NationalOysterDay #OysterRestoration #WildlifeConservation #WilderHumber #Biodiversity #SaveOurSeas

🌊 Site Visit Success! 🌊 We recently visited Iain Ross from The Deep Project at their site in Dornoch Firth, Scotland 🏴 and it's safe to say it was a successful trip! The native oysters (seen in Image 1) show an impressive growth of 3mm just this month, with six weeks of zero mortality! These numbers are crucial in ensuring the continued health and expansion of our oyster populations 🦪 Plus, we’re thrilled to have delivered 3,000 more oysters to The Deep Project, contributing to their incredible work in marine conservation and sustainability 🌟 #OysterGrowth #MarineConservation #SustainableAquaculture #TheDeepProject #OceanHealth #OysterRestoration
