An Ohio Department of Development grant will support work in CBE Prof. & Chair Umit Ozkan's lab to advance a carbon recycling technology that has the potential to be both environmentally and economically viable. https://lnkd.in/gh_SnVBQ Ozkan’s project will develop a process that uses carbon dioxide from coal power plants to produce syngas, a valuable chemical, through high-temperature electrolysis. Successful lab tests will be followed by pilot-scale tests with industry partner Nexceris, LLC, a manufacturer of clean energy sensors and power generators intended to empower the clean energy transition. Her project is one of just 14 selected by ODOD aimed at building on Ohio’s storied history of innovation in the coal industry. “Developing an efficient carbon recycling strategy will continue to be a leading challenge for the researchers and engineers for the foreseeable future due to the strong correlation between climate change and increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from use of fossil fuels,” said Ozkan. “Effective capture and utilization of CO2 from the coal-burning plants have both economic and environmental advantages.”

Summer learning heats up during MATX (Materials at Extremes) Summer School, hosted by Assoc. Prof. Calvin M. Stewart, PhD. The free 6-week program allows students to gain experience in thermomechanical testing, 3D printing, and modeling and simulation. Open to any high school, undergraduate or graduate student in Central Ohio, the program gives participants the opportunity to assist Stewart and his PhD students as they explore the mechanics of materials at extremes for aero engines, rockets and spacecraft. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gNU_zsnM “We have incredible students at Ohio State, but if those students have only focused on their college work and have no extracurriculars, no internships, and no research experiences, they're not going to stand out from other applicants at these major engineering companies,” explained Stewart, who holds appointments in the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. “By making this a free program that encourages students of all levels, it makes it accessible so you can get that first experience in a safe and friendly environment.” Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University

A new Center for Computing Education will provide multiple pathways for Ohio State students in all majors to infuse and blend computing into their learning 👩🏻💻 👨🏽💻 👩🏿💻 https://lnkd.in/gPHCspzH In response to the needs of students and companies in search of talent, The Ohio State College of Engineering is launching the Center for Computing Education. With partnership from multiple colleges in the university, the Center for Computing Education will create, teach and clearly actualize the principles that connect computing and society while transforming the delivery of foundational computer science concepts into accessible formats for diverse learners. By autumn semester 2025, all students matriculating from Ohio State will be able to attain basic competency in burgeoning computing and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, with some choosing to acquire more programming skills or blend computing into their curriculum. “The exponential growth in the need for computing and AI skills is impacting the future of work in a profound manner,” explained Dean of Engineering Ayanna Howard. “Through the active engagement of faculty and staff throughout Ohio State, the center will train the next generation of professionals that can couple their selected discipline with the computing skills needed to effectively adapt to the workforce demands of the future.”
