Although foreign direct investment in #China has been declining, its own #FDI initiatives are on the move, including: “ *Chinese firms' foreign direct investments soared to $160 billion, building factories in countries from Malaysia to Morocco. * Sales by listed Chinese firms in the global south have skyrocketed to $800 billion, surpassing their sales in affluent nations. * Chinese companies big and small are going global….” See Ashley Dudarenok 艾熙丽 ‘s additional data points below… MY TAKE: If only it weren’t often such an all or nothing scenario. That said, they’re hardly the first empire-builders. It’s only unfortunate key lessons from those episodes would appear to be flippantly scoffed at or ignored. Then again, there’s something to be said for the powers of numbers. For now, this is a key pillar in an unflattering narrative on its own or when paired with trade wars skirmishes. Perhaps the high #tech side of the grab is ultimately more impressive, with 6x the number of U.S. #patents in #AI and, in light of U.S. export controls, a strengthening local #chips sector. China's direct investment liabilities dropped nearly $15 billion, turning negative for only the second time. More below. 🌐 Chinese firms' foreign direct investments soared to $160 billion, building factories in countries from Malaysia to Morocco. 🌐 Sales by listed Chinese firms in the global south have skyrocketed to $800 billion, surpassing their sales in affluent nations. Chinese companies big and small are going global. So, what are some Chinese companies active in the global south? ✔️ Companies like Transsion, for instance, dominate markets, producing half of the smartphones purchased in Africa. ✔️ Mindray is the leader in the patient monitoring systems market with a 25% share of the installed base across Latin American hospitals. ✔️ Chinese electric vehicle and wind turbine makers are expanding in the developing world, home to nine of TikTok's top ten markets. The global benefits are clear: affordable, innovative and often more eco-friendly products. $100 smartphones provide internet access to the world's grassroots consumers, affordable medical devices save lives, and low-cost climate-friendly technology helps developing countries manage emissions. The flip side is foreign investment outflows highlight concerns about slowing growth and regulatory issues, potentially reducing job creation and innovation in China. As Chinese firms focus abroad, domestic needs might be neglected, posing challenges for the government in balancing overseas growth with internal issues. Some are concerned about the impacts on local markets and economic sovereignty as a result of Chinese companies' growing influence in these regions, which they believe will lead to increased dependency and potential political leverage.
