Kira manusis, MD, a #cataract specialist at #NYEE, discusses #miCOR, a new surgical tool that is improving cataract surgery for her patients like Jon Gingerich. New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai was one of only 10 centers in the US (the first in New York) to trial this new technology in January of 2024. Developed by Sean Ianchulev MD MPH, Director of the Ophthalmic Innovation and Technology at NYEE, the hand-held device allows surgeons to perform cataract surgery using less energy which has the potential to benefit patient outcomes. #cataractsurgery https://lnkd.in/eUqw2jpc

Alon Harris, MS, PhD, FARVO, Director of Ophthalmic Vascular Diagnostic & Research Program and Co-Director of the Center for Ophthalmic Artificial Intelligence & Human Health, in collaboration with Dr. Giovanna Guidoboni (University of Maine) and high school students developed new methods to quantify the relative impact of blood pressure and intraocular pressure on ocular hemodynamics. Based on these results, new approaches to #glaucoma care that have never been explored before, based on the co-regulation of blood pressure and intraocular pressure, can be developed. Dr. Harris and Dr. Guidoboni were the first to develop a theoretical framework via a physiology-based mathematical model capable of translating the concepts into quantifiable metrics. The high school students are taking this a step further by developing a physical model of the circulation in the eye that can visually show the effects of the two pressures on blood flow. This will allow clinicians to learn more about the two-pressure system and to help educate the community. #mountsinai #nyee #ophthalmology #AI #artificialintelligence https://lnkd.in/eD9h3fmU
