Where the power of art engages the spirit of community.

About us

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art invites all people to explore the art in its care, and through its vast collections, the depths and complexities of human experiences. We strive to create a sense of belonging, where staff and volunteers can do meaningful work connecting people to art. We create an informed, invested group of staff and volunteers through shared values and open, direct and respectful communication. We embrace IDEAS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access and Sustainability) in every aspect of our ideals and aspirations, as we believe these values to be paramount to success. Each staff member and volunteer embodies the institution’s commitments and agrees to exhibit behaviors that align with them. We hold one another to these expectations so that, together, we may know, own, energize and sustain our culture and the institution for generations to come.

Updates

  • ⬆️ Head and shoulders above it all ⬆️ Next time you’re in the Crossroads Art District, look up and marvel at this pair of billboards from Nelson-Atkins educator Bernadette Negrete — one of eight artists selected to participate in Charlotte Street's 2024-2025 Crossroads Artboards program. Negrete’s boards feature images from her short film barbenheimer/feminine rage, inspired by her poem of the same title. The film explores the artist’s complex relationships with her body, sexuality, and racial identity. Every three months, a new pair of commissioned works will be displayed on the double-sided billboards. barbenheimer/feminine rage is on view at 125 Southwest Blvd until September.

  • On Sunday, Aug. 4, art historian Sarah Magnatta joins the Nelson-Atkins for Contemporary Tibetan Art: Materials and Museums, a conversation about contemporary Tibetan art, its expressions of cultural tradition, and its presence in the context of global art trends and topics. The program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition My Father's Death, featuring artist Sonam Dolma Brauen's sculpture assembled from Tibetan monk's robes and traditional votives. • Today is #HIVTestingDay — a time to encourage folks to connect with care services in their communities and get tested for HIV. In Kansas City, KC CARE Health Center provides free HIV testing and education as well as prevention, treatment, and primary care. Learn more about their HIV services: bit.ly/45OWC1t The artist Niki de Saint Phalle used her art to fight the stigmas around HIV/AIDS during the epidemic of the 80s and 90s. Among those works is AIDS: You Can’t Catch it Holding Hands, a book she wrote and illustrated in collaboration with immunologist Silvio Barandun. Rendered in Saint Phalle’s typically colorful and imaginative style, the book provides plainspoken guidance about the virus, its transmission, and safe sexual practices. The book is currently on view in the exhibition Niki de Saint Phalle: Rebellion and Joy, a wide-ranging survey of the artist’s career.
