🌾 What are perennial grains? 🌾 Perennial grains are long-lived alternatives to major grains like barley, lentils, and sunflower seeds. Examples of new perennial grains include Kernza® in the US and perennial rice in China, with many more crops in development that The Land Institute and partners will release over the next two decades. Perennial grains allow farmers to plant once and harvest a crop for many years without replanting. These crops’ longevity and deep root systems build healthy soil and protect it from erosion, better utilize water, foster biodiversity, remove carbon from the air, and more. As new hardware for agriculture, perennial grains can transform our approach to farming by achieving high-yielding, climate-resilient food crops with robust ecological, economic, and social benefits.
