Earlier this month, Kresge hosted Our Urban Future: The Next Era of Making Change in America’s Cities, a summit in Detroit convening 350 changemakers from more than a dozen cities. We sought to address some of the most significant issues of our day: racial repair and healing, climate adaptation and mitigation, economic mobility and abundance. The discussions were deeply substantive and insightful. Beyond the content, being with a forward-thinking and imaginative group of changemakers was refreshing and meaningful. There is something magical about experiencing fellowship and shared purpose — together. At Kresge, we plan to process what we heard at the summit over an extended period. We're excited to incorporate participants' insights into our existing efforts. Stay tuned for further updates on lessons learned. In the meantime, this video recap captures some of the action and insights. — Kresge American Cities Program Managing Director Chantel Rush Tebbe

As we all gear up for an important one-month sprint to the November elections, we can all agree that getting out the #vote is of the essence, regardless of party affiliation or ideological orientation. Despite the growing number of attempts at enacting voting restrictions - including constraints on mail-in ballots and mail ballot drop boxes - there is the occasional ray of light encouraging #voting: The Michigan Secretary of State recently unveiled new designs developed by Detroit young people for the iconic “I Voted” stickers. Here they are: https://lnkd.in/gQYMGdvN

Kresge Investment Office Managing Director Venus Phillips, CFA, CAIA, was named to Pensions & Investments’ (P&I) 2024 class of Influential Women in Institutional Investing. The list of 60 women, who collectively manage $59 trillion in investable capital, exemplifies the commitment to improving outcomes for beneficiaries and promoting greater representation across the industry, writes P&I President and Publisher Nikki Pirrello. Phillips leads investment recruiting efforts and champions Kresge’s ‘25% by ’25’ pledge to have 25% of the foundation’s U.S. assets invested with firms owned or managed by women and people of color by 2025. Congratulations!

We could not be more thrilled that the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has named Nicole Sherard-Freeman as its new president. She will be succeeding Richard DeVore, who has served with deep distinction for nearly three years and who has decided to retire. Nicole will be beyond fabulous. Congratulations Nicole!

At this year's Detroit Homecoming, Rip Rapson spoke with Knight Foundation President & CEO Maribel Perez Wadsworth about the next decade of philanthropy in Detroit. He asks, "How does our civic culture approach its most difficult questions?" One way is through collaboration. Rapson touted the collaboration between philanthropies working in Detroit including, The Skillman Foundation, Knight Foundation, Ford Foundation, Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation and many others. "Collaboration is not an episodic thing. It has to be cultivated. It's like a muscle... It's been a long and slow process, but you keep working at it. It's never done, to be sure. The challenges and opportunities are constantly changing. But the opportunities to connect with the philanthropic community in Detroit are quite powerful." Today, our longtime Environment Program Managing Director Lois DeBacker is retiring after 33 years in philanthropy and 16 years at Kresge. We will miss her for many reasons, including her sense of humor! She's pictured here at her send-off earlier this week with T-shirts and a prop rubber chicken, a team inside joke. Join us in wishing Lois all the best as she enters this new stage of life. Thank you, Lois, for your years of service advancing climate change mitigation, adaptation, and justice!

We’re very proud to partner with Opportunity Finance Network on a new fellow position that will advise this national network of CDFIs on climate finance development. Joe Evans will continue his work with our Social Investment Practice on behalf of Kresge’s Environment Program throughout this fellowship.
Taking a moment to share this news as well as to thank my colleague and friend Joe Evans for his willingness to take on this role. Joe is the longest-tenured member of our team and one of the most experienced program-related investment portfolio directors in our sector. He's also one of the country's foremost experts in community development climate finance having invested in CDFI's, green banks, installers, TA providers, engineering firms, charging station providers, weatherization, numerous trade associations, and many others too numerous to count. When Joe and I spoke about this opportunity we both agreed we would look back at this time as the birth of the community development climate finance movement and it will be as important or maybe even more important than other seminal moments like the creation of the LIHTC or the founding of the CDFI Fund. That realization led us to ask what more can we do to support our partners? The unfortunate answer for my team is to send Joe out on loan to help OFN build the infrastructure the sector will need over the next decade to truly bring climate into everything we do in community development finance. It will be painful for our team but we are retaining 50% of his time to continue the investment work and will look forward to welcoming him back in a few years knowing how much knowledge and experience he will bring back to the team. I'm really grateful to work for an organization that is willing to invest not only its financial capital but also its human capital in the success of our partners. I'm looking forward to seeing everything Joe and OFN accomplish together and if you see him at Climate Week in NY, please congratulate him. https://lnkd.in/gAGWW9By
