We were very pleased that the Pulse article referenced the recently-published op-ed by Healthcare Trust Institute CEO Tina Grande and Deven McGraw, co-founder and Chief Regulatory Officer of Ciitizen on the need to establish greater trust and confidence in health data exchanges.

I was very pleased today to bring the perspectives of the Healthcare Trust Institute to a panel discussion on “Advancing Health Devices and Services in the Connected Home,” sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association and Connectivity Standards Alliance. It is vital that consumers have access to innovative health care technologies that will allow them to stay in the comfort of their own homes. For this to work, though, patients must have confidence that their health information is only being shared with the health care professionals and people they trust. This necessitates two critical actions: First, workable, risk-based security standards harmonized across federal agencies and state lines, similar to the framework created by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Patients need to trust that companies are able to protect data from cybercriminals. And, second, we need to trust that our data is protected and respected by the companies providing in-home technologies. This requires a workable national privacy law that preempts conflicting state laws and is consistent with the HIPAA framework. This will keep our information from entities and people who should have no access to it while ensuring that our doctors and caregivers can get the data they need from these devices. I want to thank my fellow panelists – Steven Posnack of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), Michael Philips of AARP and Lee Levin of the Digital Medicine Society (DiMe) for an excellent discussion.

We are astounded by the numbers - 101% increase in breaches of health information from 2018-2023, and an 853% increase in individuals affected. Harmonizing cyber reporting requirements across government will help us manage this enormous problem.
