This Meet a Team Member Monday, we’d like to introduce Timothy Hou! Tim is a research and design engineer at The GIANT Company Support Office in Carlisle, Pa. He’s worked for the company since April 2020, starting as a GIANT Direct shopper in State College. Tim joined us after living in Australia for six years, working as an engineer to improve manufacturing in health care and banknote printing (literally printing money)! When asked about his favorite part of his job, Tim shared, “By far, my favorite part of my role is that no two days look the same. All the projects I work on impact various parts of the business, and I get to collaborate with colleagues across multiple departments.” So what does his job entail? In his words, “I enjoy getting the opportunity to apply my engineering experience and solve problems to further improve process efficacy and to simplify the work of others.” Tim enjoys and excels at innovating, problem solving, and collaborating. A recent example of this is the company-wide deployment of the Mobile Grocery Wing project, which improves merchandising and standardizes the look across the front end of our stores. His team also launched a project across 35 stores that improved the process on how fast-moving perishable products, including yogurt, are stocked by team members and shopped by customers. Working for a company that cares about the planet matters to Tim and is an important part of his work. He says, “I care deeply about healing our planet and doing everything possible to improve our environment. This can be seen in the projects I have led and advocated for such as installing air curtains at our store entrances and using antimicrobial deli bags, which reduced the use of deli plastic wrap by 98%.” He also cares about his community. His favorite volunteer event was in November 2023, when his team volunteered at the Central PA Food Bank. The team helped to organize and pack 1,500 Thanksgiving meals for families in need. Tim shares, “This was a deeply rewarding experience, and I am thankful that the company supports and encourages us to volunteer and help our communities.” Tim is famous by proximity. His corgi Mabel won the company’s Cutest Pet Award in 2022. (Look at her photo – it’s totally deserved!) 😍🐶 We’re happy to have Tim as part of the GIANT team and grateful for his efforts to think outside the box!

As part of our Changing Children's Lives campaign, our teams have had so much fun hosting Miracle Kids and their families for in-store scavenger hunts over the past few weeks! The kiddos visited different departments, met team members, and filled their bags with fun swag. The smiles say it all! Help us support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals by rounding up at the register from now through August 31. All donations help provide critical care and services, fund groundbreaking research, and purchase life-saving medical equipment. Together, we can #ChangeKidsHealth!

Today, in partnership with Geisinger and Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Inc. (CSO), we unveiled a new mobile food pantry ready to serve individuals and families facing food insecurity in Pennsylvania's Central Susquehanna Valley.     “Food insecurity impacts every neighborhood and can have serious implications for individuals and communities. That’s why we work with local hunger relief partners and support initiatives such as this new mobile food pantry to help eliminate hunger in the communities we serve,” said Nick Koch, head of wellbeing, The GIANT Company. “This innovative solution brings fresh, healthy food directly to families that need it the most but may lack the transportation necessary to visit a traditional pantry.”     The mobile pantry will provide fresh produce, dairy, meat, and shelf-stable pantry items. In its first two distributions in late June, the mobile pantry helped 175 individuals. For more information or to view the schedule for the mobile food pantry, visit www.csocares.org

It’s Monday, so buckle up! We’re introducing you to another The GIANT Company team member. Andrew Mahoney is the facility manager at our Perishable Distribution Center (PDC) in Carlisle, Pa., that serves all of our stores across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Andy knows his stuff – he’s been with the PDC for more than 20 years! In 2000, he started as a selector, strategically moving products from shelves so that the grocery stores had what they needed to best serve customers. Since then, he’s served in multiple operations positions at the PDC, including shift leader, supervisor, operations manager, and now, facility manager. Team members throughout the company see him as knowledgeable and genuine. He’s happy to share his wealth of knowledge about the facility and the company with others and wholeheartedly cares about setting up team members for success. Andy’s favorite part of his day-to-day? Interacting with PDC team members. He reinforces the company’s team promises every day, through his commitment to encouraging team members to be themselves, grow through opportunities, and make a difference. The team at the PDC is culturally diverse, and this is celebrated in many ways, including with a world map at the facility featuring pins sharing where everyone’s from. The map reads, “Many Cultures. One Team.” Andy is fascinated by different cultures and loves learning about team members’ families, preferred cuisines, and what motivates each individual. He recognizes that with this knowledge, he can make the facility an even better place to work.  “My favorite memories at the company are around our team member events,” said Andy. “At the PDC, we plan events to help team members engage outside of our regular work environment, and it’s awesome to see people, who may not seem have a whole lot in common, make lasting connections.” Andy’s favorite accomplishments with The GIANT Company involve the team getting through challenges together. “Watching the team engage and work through big events, like weather events and global pandemics, is a sight to see,” Andy shared. “This is the best team in the business, and it really shines through during these challenges. There is never a doubt that our team will overcome all obstacles.” Ultimately, Andy knows his and his teammates’ work is key to The GIANT Company’s purpose of connecting families for a better future.  “Each and every day, we try to do everything in our power to make the stores’ interactions with the PDC the best they can be,” said Andy. “We do this by trying to select, load, and deliver our perishable items as accurately, timely, and to the standard that is expected of us. This is important because if we don’t get our stores what they need, they can’t best serve their customers, and those customers are the reason we do what we do.”
