The Food Project started in 1991 as a way to bring together youth and adults across the divides of race and class through the shared work of farming. Since our founding, The Food Project has grown into a nationally-recognized non-profit organization that works at the intersection of youth, food, and community. Over the past 25 years, we have grown from a single two-acre farm in Lincoln, Mass., to an organization that now maintains 70 acres of both urban and suburban farms in five towns on the North Shore and in Greater Boston. We believe that food is a unique vehicle for creating personal and social change. We believe that everyone should have access to fresh, local, healthy, affordable food regardless of age, gender identity, socio-economic background, or the color of your skin. The Food Project aims to transform our food system into an equitable and inclusive model that is community-controlled and supports food justice for all. Working in partnership, we can realize the vision of a more sustainable and just food system.

It was a day of both virtual and in-person encounters, connecting with individuals from Chicago. Alex Chicelsky, a longstanding friend, colleague, and mentor, graciously shared his wisdom on community dynamics, permaculture principles, and the significance of LEAD certificates in fostering community garden initiatives, research endeavors, and renewable energy projects. His insights prompted us to contemplate how breaking down silos could foster collaborative innovation. We also had the pleasure of engaging with Will Capriolla from The Boston Food Project, who illuminated their commendable efforts towards youth inclusivity. Their project involves actively involving high school students in farm activities, participation in farmers' markets, and imparting essential job readiness and leadership skills. This blend of student-driven initiatives, environmental stewardship, and practical skill-building was truly inspiring. Furthermore, our discussions with Christine Amor, who is affiliated with Kent Gardens, provided valuable perspectives on the intersection of education and employment opportunities. She highlighted the pressing need for educational equity in underprivileged communities and emphasized the growing demand for hands-on, experiential learning opportunities.
