Announcing the 2024 Lowell Thomas Awardees! Explorers are pathfinders in myriad fields of exploration from outer to inner space and the new pathways to knowledge about the wonders of planet Earth. Named for broadcast journalist and explorer Lowell Thomas, this annual award is given thematically to a group of outstanding explorers to recognize excellence in domains or fields of exploration. It has previously been awarded to the likes of Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, Kathy Sullivan, Sir Edmund Hillary, Kris Thompkins, E.O. Wilson, and many more. Pathfinders include extraordinary individuals who have grit, tenacity, are undaunted by failure, and endure all obstacles, finding a way forward to discovery and results that expand the limits of knowledge. None exemplify these qualities better than our 2024 Lowell Thomas Awardees, the Pathfinders: Carole Baldwin, Ph.D. - Marine biologist, underwater explorer, and ichthyologist Ellen Pikitch, Ph.D. - Marine scientist and ocean conservationist Sammy Ramsey, Ph.D. - Entomologist and conservationist Andrés Ruzo - geothermal scientist, conservationist, and educator Read more about the awardees here: https://lnkd.in/efg89nwg

Take a deep dive into the reptiles of Ecuador with Alejandro Arteaga 🐍 On September 12, biologist Alejandro Arteaga will bring the story of his book, The Reptiles of Ecuador, to The Explorers Club and a few copies. The book took Arteaga, EC50 Class of 2024 and an Explorers Club Expedition Grantee, 14 years to produce. Arteaga will share some of the secrets behind finding the nearly 500 target species, some of which were previously declared extinct. He will also answer some questions about the project, such as:  🦎 How do you pose all the snakes and lizards? 📷 How did we photograph a 4 meter long caiman? 🔜 What’s next? The event starts at 7pm, September 12, with a beer and wine reception beginning at 6pm. Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gucsZXG6

Fellow Explorers, We are heartbroken to learn that one of our newest members Ms. Karla Dana lost her life while on an expedition this week. She was part of a six-person international crew attempting to sail more than 500 nautical miles from The Faroe Islands to Norway to conduct research in honor of famed Viking navigator Naddodd. The crew’s Viking replica boat Naddoddur capsized in rough seas off Måløy, Norway Tuesday, August 27. The remaining crew, including Explorers Club member Andy Fitze, a Swiss skipper and the expedition leader, were taken to shore with no signs of physical injuries. The Explorers Club sends its deepest condolences to Ms. Dana’s family and friends. We are in contact with her family and they shared that she was very proud to be a member of the club. May her memory be a blessing. Her pursuit of meaningful science to the betterment of humankind and her spirit of exploration will continue to inspire us. Happy #WorldElephantDay! 🐘 Here’s a snapshot of the incredible field work some of our elephantastic EC50 awardees are doing: 🇮🇳 Dr. Krithi K. Karanth, EC50 2024, is the CEO at the Centre for Wildlife Studies. She co-leads the Elephant Program which aims to establish long-term research and monitoring of Asian elephant populations to shed light on their distribution, ecology, and behavior. In the Wild Shaale board game, kids become elephants journeying through the challenging forests of the Western Ghats, trying to reach their favorite waterfall. Will they be able to navigate past poachers, disrupted migration routes, and bustling villages to make it to the water? 🇲🇿 Dominique Goncalves, EC50 2021, is the Manager of the Elephant Ecology Project in Gorongosa National Park where she conducts long term monitoring of a recovering elephant population in Mozambique through GPS satellite tracking and looks into how they choose and rewild their former habitats and what it means for the people who share the landscape with them. 🇰🇪 Paula Kahumbu, EC50 2023 and the CEO of WildlifeDirect Inc, is a Kenyan ecologist committed to transforming conservation results in Africa and the world through storytelling, science, advocacy and education. At WildlifeDirect, she mobilized African support to save elephants through a hard-hitting campaign, Hands Off Our Elephants.
