How can clinical providers support young adults navigating identity and #disorderedeating? In this week’s installment of our expert summer series—a deep dive into the complex issues facing young adults today— Emil K. Smith, formerly of the FEDUPCollective, speaks about the barriers to care that many transgender young adults face, and what we can be doing to offer affirming resources and support. In our expert's words: "Both eating disorder treatment and access to gender affirming medical interventions are essential components of many TGD youth’s recovery journeys. Unfortunately, many trans youth are only able to access one of the other." Emil K. Smith Read (or watch on YouTube) here: https://lnkd.in/eyKN-8_p

In many BIPOC communities there remains stigma surrounding mental health challenges. Though it may be difficult, the best way to reduce stigma around these conversations is to actually be open and honest rather than keeping them hidden. This #BIPOCMentalHealthMonth we're grateful to Mental Health America for providing us with tips to help us bring up our struggles to our communities and help normalize the conversation around mental health.

As young adults, family relationships have a huge impact on how we see the world. In this clip, The Dorm Clinical Supervisor Mat Elder, LICSW, explains how it's important to enter family therapy with an open heart andf self-compassion as you begin to dismantle systems that may not have served you in the past (and hold onto the ones that did!). This is especially true for clients exploring their gender and identity. At The Dorm, up to 30% of our clients identify as trans, and groups like Transgender Nonbinary Process Group, as well as parent coaching and intensive family therapy, help our clients and their parents redefine how their relationships will look as they grow and emerge into adulthood. One third of those experiencing symptoms of #schizophrenia don't see improvement, despite multiple trials of anti-psychotic medications. As part of a new summer series, featuring leading voices in young adult mental health, we learn from Dr. Rocco Marotta of Silver Hill Hospital how "treatment resistant" schizophrenia may be on the rise due to higher rates and potency of cannabis use in young adults, among other factors (plus how treatment providers can help support young people experiencing #psychosis with "5 Pillars of Care.") This month during #BIPOCMentalHealthMonth we honor the memory of Bebe Moore Campbell, journalist, author, and mental health advocate, who wrote and worked to lift up the voices and agency of those whose experiences were often overlooked. In 2006, she wrote of her family’s experience learning that her close relative was diagnosed with bipolar disorder: "Once my loved one accepted the diagnosis, healing began for the entire family, but it took too long. It took years. Can't we, as a nation, begin to speed up that process? We need a national campaign to destigmatize mental illness, especially one targeted toward African Americans [...] Recovery is possible." Today with the help of Mental Health America we're shining a light on some common mental health myths (vs. reality) that persist, and what we know today to be true of working towards recovery. #strengthincommunities #bipocmhm #bebemoorecampbell
