✊🏽 "Right now only 8% of the ocean is protected. If we are to prevent the extinction of 1 million species, if we are to prevent the collapse of our life support system, we need to protect 30% of the planet's land and sea by 2030." — Enric Sala ✨ What an exhilarating evening on Nov. 10! Our first sold-out event since 2019. 🎖️ We awarded Enric Sala with the Art/Act: Award for his lifetime dedication to protecting our oceans. Thank you Enric, for putting it all in perspective! With Ken Brower opening the evening, Dan Myers of National Geographic Society shared how crucial it is to ensure protected areas have the political will for enforcement, funding for illegal fishing spotting technology, and the collaboration of Indigenous stewards and local community partners. He cited Palau as a good example of melding funding and folks to successfully keep the marine reserve pristine. Sejal Choksi-Chugh of community organization San Francisco Baykeeper revealed how they hold polluters accountable ... like getting a permanent ban passed in Richmond against coal and petroleum coke storage—despite a multiyear battle against a facility they caught exploiting a loophole in the Clean Water Act to dump coal waste in our Bay. You all kept the dialogue in the gallery alive—thank you Brown Girl Surf, Plastic Pollution Coalition, San Francisco Baykeeper, and Stop Fish Bombing USA 🤝🏽. Thank you for your curiosity, for asking hard questions, and for dedicating yourself to taking action! 📷 Visit Pristine Seas: Bringing the Ocean Back Organized and traveled by National Geographic Society On view until March 4 at the David Brower Center ❤️ Free and open to the public>> https://bit.ly/3Mpap5c Hazel Wolf Gallery 2150 Allston Way Berkeley CA 94704 Mon-Thurs 10am-4pm, Fri 10am-2 pm 🎥Videography by Field Station Media #artgallery #nationalgeographic #artactaward #nowopen #climateaction #outdoorsforall #marineconservation #nowopen #bayareartists #activism #environmentaljustic #dowtownberkeley
