  • We love our interns here at Davey! Happy National Intern Day to our TREEmendous interns! We appreciate all your hard work and for supporting your teams. We hope it's been a great season of learning. Davey interns from the Mid-Atlantic and Virginia Tidewater markets recently participated in the Mid-Atlantic Intern Training Day at Towson University in Maryland. The Intern Day overlapped with one of the Davey Institute of Horticulture Sciences (D.I.H.S.) training programs. The interns were able to receive insight into the kinds of training and development opportunities Davey provides. The interns joined the D.I.H.S. attendees for a liquid soil applications field training session. The interns also received climbing and tree I.D./inventory training. They also learned about our Learning Management System (LMS), career opportunities available and received an overview of Davey. Have a Davey intern working on your team? Give them a shoutout in the comments and let us know about the awesome work they've done! #NationalInternDay #Interns #Internship

  • Happy Birthday to Martin L. Davey, Sr. This photo shows him with his family for a photo in their garden in Kent in 1927. Pictured from left are Martin L. Davey, Jr., Martin Sr., daughter Evangeline and wife, Berenice. Martin L. Davey, Sr., served as president of Davey Tree from 1923 until his death in 1946. Martin was the second president of the company his father John founded in 1880. Martin helped guide Davey Tree through the Great Depression and WWII, both of which offered their own, unique business challenges. Martin is widely regarded as historically the company’s best salesman, having turned his father’s passion for tree care and scientific innovation into a multi-million-dollar business. Martin also served as governor of Ohio. His first term was from 1935 to 1937 and his second term was from 1937 to 1939. He did this all while continuing to serve as president of Davey.

  • Eastern Utility services’ employees, Chris Dodge, groundperson, Dennis Morales, general foreman, and Daniel Nave, foreman, volunteered alongside our client's employees to help spruce up the plant beds at East Marion Elementary School, located in Silver Springs, Florida. Joseph Pate, senior account manager, Eastern Utility, coordinated the volunteer work with Anthony Santangelo, vegetation manager, who works for our client. This is the second year Davey has joined our client on this project. “It’s a pleasure to do volunteer work for the schools because the kids are our future,” Anthony said. The volunteers worked on putting wood chips outside of the school’s entrance and in the back. Morales also noticed there was a decaying tree that could be a danger to the students, so the team recommended that the school has it removed as well. “It was really nice seeing the faces of the kids that were there,” Dennis said. “They were excited as the trucks came in and were responsive to what we were doing. Their smiles made everyone feel good." Thank you for living Davey's stewardship value!

  • For Wendy Austin, John Davey’s motto, “Do it right or not at all,” meant going beyond the scope of her day-to-day job to save a family’s property and lives. While working on a windy day, Wendy observed a nearby unattended debris fire between a camper trailer and a mobile home. “Safety is the most important thing to me,” she said. “Having battled many wildfires since childhood, my radar goes off every time I see smoke.  The potential loss of life grips me, and I have to remember my training each time.”  Wendy got the attention of the property owner, evacuated the occupants, and got them to call the fire department. She grabbed her fire suppression tools and began raking debris away when the property owners informed her that the water had been shut off. Knowing that without water, she couldn’t continue trying to extinguish the fire, she got the four adults and five children far away and waited for emergency services to arrive. The fire department quickly extinguished the fire; some family members suffered smoke inhalation, but there was no loss of life and only slight damage to the property. “Davey is very clear that we should never take on a fire too big for our suppression measures and that we are never required to fight a fire,” Wendy said. “Once I realized that I did not have sufficient suppression measures, my only goal was to keep the family safe.” Wendy is a UVM Technician, Davey Resource Group (DRG), Utility Vegetation Management (UVM). Thank you, Wendy, for living Davey's safety value! #LivingOurValues #Safety #theDaveyway #DaveyDifference

  • Can conflict be healthy? In some cases, yes. However, leaders need to be cognizant of how conflict is managed around difficult subjects and whether the discussion around those topics serves a greater purpose. Davey's Greg Ina, executive vice president of the Davey Institute and Employee Development, shares his thoughts on professionally navigating difficult subjects. #Leadership #Conflict #ConflictManagement #theDaveyway #DaveyDifference
