About us

The Barnes Family started DAISY in 1999 to say a profound thank you to nurses for the extraordinary skill and compassion they provide patients and families every day. Our experience with nurses during son Patrick Barnes' eight week hospitalization showed us that direct care nurses do super-human work that is rarely recognized. We had no idea that today, more than 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 32 other countries and territories would honor their nurses all year long with The DAISY Award. Over 2,100,000 nominations have been written, describing how a nurse has impacted a patient or family. Clearly, the Barnes Family are not the only people compelled to say thank you to nurses! The strategic value of this kind of meaningful recognition is now being proven in research study after study. Impacts include contribution to a healthy work environment, nurse satisfaction, compassion satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and cultural transformation. It's remarkable what happens when a healthcare organization focuses some attention on all the good that's going on. We also honor nursing students with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students and nursing faculty with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. Through our J. Patrick Barnes Grants, we support nursing research and EBP projects with grants to nurses.

Today, we would like to highlight DAISY Honoree Delena Mitchell! A patient’s family wrote the nomination for Delena saying they were blessed to be surrounded by a compassionate team of caregivers, but Delena left a lasting impact. Delena was not directly assigned to the patient but expressed empathy and dedication to the patient and her family. She introduced the family to bereavement kits and helped create fingerprint bracelets that the family says they’ll cherish forever. Delena also gifted the family a box filled with comforting mementos, including a teddy bear that the patient held in her final days. Delena’s kindness made an incredibly difficult time a little better for this family. Thank you, Delena, for all you did for this family. Congratulations on being a DAISY Honoree. Today, we would like to highlight DAISY Honoree Paul Longoria. This nomination was submitted by a family whose son O was born with a critical heart defect. Their story starts in 2018 when they spent 9 months in the CICU at Texas Children's Hospital. Without family nearby, the staff became like family, and Paul Longoria, one of O's nurses, holds a very special place in this family’s hearts. During this family’s tough days Paul’s kindness, hard work, and constant check-ins meant the world to them. When O returned for another surgery in 2022, Paul was there again, providing care and support during O’s long wait for a heart transplant. Paul not only cared for O but also advocated fiercely for his best treatment. His dedication and friendship with O grew stronger every day, even earning him the title of O’s “favorite nurse.” O was so inspired by Paul that he dressed up as him for Halloween, proudly calling himself a “super special nurse: Misser Paul.” Paul's unwavering care and commitment to this family will always be remembered, and they are forever grateful for his impact on O’s journey. Thank you, Paul, for everything you’ve done for this family. Congratulations on being a DAISY Honoree! Read Paul's nomination story here: https://lnkd.in/gVSqJhZQ
