Earlier this week, Governor Hochul announced that TCCNY was awarded a grant supporting our organization's development of innovative programs to reduce suicide risk among youth from historically underserved communities. Distributed over the next five years, this $3.4 million dollar investment in our organization means more resources and programs will become available to our neighbors throughout the boroughs, closing the critical services gap for young people at risk for suicide in New York. “While New York’s suicide prevention efforts are nation-leading, we have seen alarming trends developing among youth and young adults since onset of the COVID-19 pandemic four years ago,” Governor Hochul said. “These awards will help develop innovative and culturally appropriate programs to serve the mental health needs of the young New Yorkers – especially those at the center of these tragic trends.” TCCNY's community-based mental health services will build a sense of safety and connectedness for at-risk populations and establish partnerships to help these individuals access treatment when needed. Join us in thanking Governor Hochul and the New York State Office of Mental Health for this opportunity, and stay tuned for exciting updates on the work to come! At The Child Center, we believe it is crucial to understand what the summer slide is and how we can collectively help our young ones manage summer learning loss. Research shows that students can lose about 2 months of reading skills and 2.5 months of math skills over a single summer, with cumulative losses adding up to the equivalent of 2 years by middle school. Early intervention, especially during elementary school, can help mitigate these losses and foster better long-term learning habits. Parents, teachers, and community members play a crucial role in combating the summer slide by engaging children in regular learning activities. Access to books is particularly impactful, with children in low-income households showing greater improvement in reading scores when they have access to reading materials over the summer. Additionally, integrating technology through educational apps and eBooks can make learning interactive and enjoyable. To further reduce the summer slide, it's essential to keep kids mentally active and engaged in various activities. The Child Center’s programs such as COMPASS for elementary students, and SONYC for middle school and high school students, are designed to combat summer slide alongside our families. By prioritizing continuous learning and making it a fun and integral part of summer routines, we can help children retain knowledge, learn new skills, and set them up for success in the upcoming school year. Cash Community Works, a program of empowerment by The Child Center, supports families through peer support, goal planning, and direct cash assistance, trusting in their ability to determine their best path forward. Our mission is to nurture their strengths, creativity, and collaborations. Anna Hou, from our Perinatal Cohort, shares her inspiring journey with us. With the support of Cash Community Works, she seized the opportunity to start her own childcare business. Beginning with $15,000 and a shared vision, Anna and her team expanded to accommodate 100 children aged 0-5 by collaborating with another childcare franchise, scaling their center to 7,000 square feet. Their success highlights the power of investment, innovation, and collective support in achieving remarkable outcomes. #TCCNY #CashCommunityWorks

Did you know that the summer slide not only affects elementary school students but also those in middle and high school? Between 70% and 78% of students experience a decline in math skills over the summer, with the most significant drop occurring between 5th and 6th grades. Additionally, more than two-thirds of the 9th-grade reading achievement gap can be traced back to cumulative summer learning loss during elementary years. How do we combat this? The Child Center, in collaboration with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, helps low-income families combat the summer slide through engaging summer programs. Our Parsons FC soccer team is a prime example. Middle school students from our Beacon and SONYC programs sharpened their athletic skills and built lifelong memories and friendships. Their near-undefeated season and impressive second-place finish in the International Mayor’s Cup highlight the power of goal-setting and teamwork. Meanwhile, our Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provided high school students with invaluable work experiences. Through career exploration and academic courses, participants developed essential workplace skills and a strong sense of confidence. SYEP, the nation's largest youth employment initiative, is crucial for supporting young people, including those from asylum-seeking families, in building a brighter future. Programs like these demonstrate how summer activities can prevent the summer slide by offering academic support, creative outlets, and real-world experiences. By engaging in enriching pursuits, youth can explore their strengths, expand their horizons, and build the confidence needed to excel. Together, we are shaping futures and strengthening communities! The summer slide has been a concern since 1996, with studies showing significant losses in reading and math skills over summer break. Recently, it was found that children in grades 3 to 5 lost about 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent in math during summer break. At The Child Center of NY, we address this challenge head-on. Our afterschool services at over a dozen sites provide a meaningful connection to the school day, ensuring continuous learning. Programs offer a mix of homework help and enrichment in literacy, STEM, arts, sports, health, leadership, and community service. Our Beacon and Cornerstone programs extend these opportunities into evenings and weekends, fostering further engagement. Children from low-income families are disproportionately affected by the summer slide, impacting their education for years. Research by James Kim, Ed.D., of Harvard, shows that much of the reading score gap between low-income ninth graders and their middle-income peers stems from summer learning differences accumulated between first and fifth grade. Through our targeted programs like COMPASS for elementary school students, made possible with funding from NYC DYCD, we strive to bridge this gap and support every child’s educational journey. Together, we can combat the summer slide and ensure success for all children in our community. Below you can find The Child Center resources for summer learning in article 2. The Child Center of NY expresses its deepest gratitude to the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation for awarding a generous grant to our Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program (P-IOP). This funding will enable us to expand capacity, increase enrollment, and extend the program’s availability from 5 to 6 days a week. The P-IOP serves an extremely high-risk population: pregnant women and new mothers diagnosed with Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), more commonly known as Postpartum Depression, and their babies. The Child Center has witnessed the profound impact of untreated PMAD in families served by our preventive programs, underscoring the critical need for this initiative. Thank you once again to the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation for supporting our efforts to provide essential care and support to these vulnerable families, helping them to build healthier and brighter futures. #TCCNY #AnthemBlueCross #BlueShieldFoundation

The Cash Community Works initiative is a groundbreaking neighborhood-based program empowering under-resourced communities in NYC, by providing peer-driven support, individualized goal planning, and direct changes in their lives and communities. Recently, we gathered in Jamaica, Queens, to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our participants. Their journeys–ranging from launching a daycare business and establishing 501(c)(3) organizations to starting fashion brands and creating lasting memories for their children—were nothing short of inspiring. This celebration was honored by the presence of one of our esteemed funders, New York Presbyterian, and TCCNY board member Barbara Mulvee. Their support underscores the transformative impact of Cash Community Works on individuals and the broader community. Thank you to everyone who makes this program possible. Together, we’re investing in the innovation, creation, and collaboration of NYC families. For more information click the link below. #Cash CommunityWorks #TCCNY Link: https://lnkd.in/gzR-UpVr
