📢 NEW REPORT For decades, Big Plastic has lied about the impacts of its toxic products, which are increasingly found to be polluting our soil, water, air, food, and bodies. Enough is enough. With national US leaders stalling on action — including failing to lead toward an ambitious plastics treaty — states and cities are taking matters into their own hands. California, New York — and just days ago, the City of Baltimore — have already filed suits aimed at holding plastic polluters accountable. Our latest report gives communities legal tools to push back and make polluters pay. #MakePollutersPay #PlasticsTreaty #PlasticsLies

The World Bank Group has a duty to deliver remedy to communities harmed by any projects it finances. The draft Remedy and Responsible Exit Framework of the IFC - International Finance Corporation - is an opportunity to remedy harms. As the Bank's Board meet this week to discuss the draft, we joined >22 civil society groups urging them to deliver a Framework that is publicly available, transparent and effective. Since the Bank's founding 80 years ago, countless communities around the world have been negatively impacted by Bank-funded development projects. Many are still awaiting remedy. They can't wait any longer. Read our demands: tinyurl.com/4dxxz83m #WorldBank #IFC #PublicFinance #Remedy Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL)

The #PlasticsTreaty negotiations are scheduled to end later this year. With a substantial amount of work left before the treaty can be ratified, it’s important to look at precedents for extending negotiation time. Learn about previous negotiation timelines in our new brief. Link in the comments.

Despite divisions among European Union (EU) Member States, Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected as President of the European Commission after securing enough votes from the European Parliament. “Von der Leyen’s plan shows a shockingly low level of climate urgency compared to five years ago when the European Green Deal was launched. While the EU elections have changed the European political landscape, the threats to our planet only escalated — citizens in Europe and elsewhere are experiencing accelerating extreme weather events, extinction of species and ecosystems, and rising cases of diseases linked to toxic pollution. Rather than seeing Europe backtrack on existing commitments and policies, we need an even stronger ambition to ensure a just transition to a fossil-free and toxic-free Europe," CIEL's Lili Fuhr. We call on von der Leyen and the new College of Commissioners to embrace decolonial, just, human rights-based, and effective solutions to address the planetary crises. This starts with: - A full, fair, fast, and funded phase-out of fossil fuels - Rejection of dangerous distractions like carbon capture and geoengineering - Effective measures to enforce strong regulations against harmful chemicals, - Phasing down petrochemicals, - Ensuring just and healthy food systems. EU leaders must also show true leadership for effective plastics production reduction provisions in the ongoing negotiations for a global plastics treaty. 📅 Register now for the 12 Hour Global Climate Justice conference! ✨ 🕛 On 22 July 2024, the Climate Clock ticks below 5 years, meaning we have less than 5 years left to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the goal set with the Paris Accords in 2015. In other words, it's time for global climate action now! To mark this moment, Centre for Climate Justice-Bangladesh (CCJ-B), Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), Environmental Lawyers Collective for Africa, La Ruta del Clima, Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change (PISFCC), and World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ) are organising a Global Climate Justice Conference. 🏛📃 The event takes place in recognition of the ongoing efforts to obtain Advisory Opinions (AOs) before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). The AOs from these international courts have the power to spark large advancements in climate justice globally, and efforts like these make us optimistic that we can turn the tide within the next five years! 💪 🌏 The conference consists of six main sessions, with one session dedicated to each of the following regions: the Pacific, South & Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America. This all will unfold within a 12-hour timeframe, making the webinar a climate justice trip around the world in 12 hours! ⛵ 🚀 Register now for the regional sessions: https://lnkd.in/dJUC5gdN #AOLetsGO #ICJAO #ICJAO4Climate #ITLOS #IACtHR #ClimateJusticeAtTheICJ #ClimateChange #OurFutureOurRights #ClimateJustice #ClimateClock #ActNow

What happened at the 2nd meeting of the Board of the Loss and Damage Fund, last week in Songdo? Find out in this great article by CIEL's Senior Campaigner, Lien Vandamme.
What happened at the 2nd meeting of the Board of the Loss and Damage Fund, last week in Songdo? 🌏 My key takeaways: 1⃣ Progress on procedural matters 2⃣ Start of more substantive work - but still a long way to go 3⃣ Recognition of the importance of participation & inclusion 4⃣ No clarity and lots of contention on the scale of the Fund 5⃣ Outstanding issues determining the Fund's future: World Bank as a host & a human rights-based Fund Read more 👇
Loss and Damage Fund: Key takeaways from the 2nd Board meeting

The second Board meeting of the Loss And Damage Fund just ended in Songdo [Republic of South Korea]. After an intense week of discussions, we welcome progress made on procedural matters, such as the host country and the name of the Fund. Yet, States still have much work to do to set up a Fund that truly delivers on climate justice. Will Board Members step up and create a fund that will reach climate-vulnerable communities and countries and meet the scale and urgency required to recover from the devastating climate impacts? Anything less would be a disservice to those communities and countries on the frontlines, who view this fund as a cornerstone in their fight against the climate crisis. #LossAndDamage #HumanRights4LDF #ClimateJustice
