Last week, TBF's Ocean Resilience Program divers PAUA MARINE RESEARCH GROUP, LLC successfully collected a genetic sample and tagged an endangered adult wild white abalone at one of the restoration sites! This helps us learn more about the remaining wild white abalone populations and recognize when we encounter the same individuals on the reef. This is a win for tomorrow's #WorldOceanDay. Why is this exciting? The kelp forests of Santa Monica Bay once teemed with seven species of abalone—red, pink, green, white, black, pinto, and flat. Through overharvesting in the past century, loss of kelp habitat, and disease, all seven species found in southern California have been nearly wiped out. Despite fishery closures for the past 20 years, wild populations of abalone have not increased on their own. The low population densities of abalone, in combination with warming waters, disease, increased competition from urchins, and kelp forest loss, have made it difficult for abalone to recover without direct restoration efforts. Therefore, TBF and partners have been working since 2010 to recover abalone populations in the kelp forests of Santa Monica Bay as a part of a statewide effort to restore abalone populations to their natural levels. #OceanConservation #WhiteAbalone #WorldOceanDay

Did you know food scraps in landfills release methane, a greenhouse gas 86x more potent than carbon dioxide? Composting locally reduces food waste in landfills, enriches soil, increases water retention, and enhances soil carbon sequestration! 💚 Table to Farm partners with Environmental Charter Schools to recycle organic food waste and grow local fresh food. In 2023 over 2,000 pounds of food scraps were recycled in T2F compost hubs! Learn more at Environmental Charter Schools earth day event this Saturday 4/20 and/or witness the impact firsthand by coming out to its next volunteer community garden event on 5/4 🌱 #earthmonth #communitycomposting

Last week, TBF's Coastal Adaptation Program in collaboration with the City of Santa Monica established a new 5-acre restoration site on Santa Monica Beach. This will further improve the resilience of the beach to erosion from sea level rise! The next step is planting native dune plants 🌱 which will increase the accumulation of sand within the site and create habitat for native wildlife. You can support TBF's Coastal Adaptation Program in restoring dunes throughout the LA county coastline by checking out our upcoming dune restoration events! Our next event is on March 27, at Manhattan Beach! Click the link to learn more, we hope to see you there! https://lnkd.in/gXFVuVfP
