Our latest Aluminum Situation statistical report shows demand for the aluminum industry in North America (U.S. and Canada) increased 4.3% year-over-year through the first quarter of 2024. Association member Norsk Hydro recently announced an $85 million investment in a new casting line at its Henderson, Kentucky aluminum recycling plant. Today we released a new report from environmental consulting firm ICF that highlights potential strategies to dramatically reduce carbon emissions in the North American aluminum industry by 2050. “Pathways to Decarbonization: A North American Aluminum Roadmap” proves that the North American region has a significant first mover advantage on emissions reduction compared to other parts of the world – but achieving net zero targets will require an all-of-society approach. Charles Johnson previewed the forthcoming North American decarbonization roadmap CRU World Aluminum Conference this week. Key takeaway -- we have a lot of work to do but the domestic industry is uniquely positioned to lead the way thanks to its low carbon aluminum advantage.

Big news today with the White House officially announcing the tripling of Section 301 tariffs various aluminum imports from China -- something the Aluminum Association has long advocated. This is a win for the U.S. aluminum industry and the nearly 700,000 American workers the sector supports. Unfortunately, China continues to engage in significant unfair trade activities, including massive state subsidies which hurt U.S. manufacturing and global carbon reduction efforts. This targeted tariff action by the Biden administration will help to counteract some of these challenges.

In a statement following the Mexican government’s announcement of increased border tariffs on hundreds of products including many types of aluminum and aluminum products, Charles Johnson noted how the move is a key first step but work remains. The association will work with the U.S. and Mexican governments to ensure that these new tariffs are constructed and enforced in a smart and targeted way. A new study by economic research firm JOHN DUNHAM & ASSOCIATES found that total U.S. aluminum jobs have held largely steady over the past decade despite a significant decline in primary aluminum production and jobs in the United States. The U.S. aluminum industry supports nearly 700,000 American jobs and $228 billion in total economic impact – nearly 1% of U.S. GDP. Notably, the industry reported record jobs in aluminum recycling, sheet & plate and other segments since tracking began in 2013. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eKQKh488
