The hotter it gets, the more air conditioning we use. The more air conditioning we use, the hotter it gets! Great article by Emily Badger in the The New York Times this morning about the not-so-subtle ways air conditioning has reshaped society, and the negative feedback loop between AC demand and emissions due to higher energy load. But it's even worse than that, because air conditioners often leak, and the refrigerant chemicals they use have thousands of times the climate-warming potential of CO2. Detecting and stopping these leaks is critical low-hanging fruit in the climate fight. Measurement and leak detection on air conditioning systems are significant drivers of cost savings for buildings, on both energy bills and operational costs. Thalo Labs was featured in the Commercial Observer today, with Brendan Hermalyn sharing how we're decarbonizing the built world while also helping buildings to operate more efficiently: “I’ve spent a lot of time making stuff that measures greenhouse gasses, whether that’s from space, on planet Earth, or deployed from boiler rooms, HVAC systems and heat pumps...It has become cheaper to measure what’s coming out of the exhaust than it is to estimate it or to guess at it. And when you can measure it, it unlocks these huge other opportunities to not just measure and know what’s happening, but to actually reduce the emissions coming out.” More insights from Brendan on the emissions landscape in the comments. It’s very exciting to see Massachusetts investing in #affordablehousing decarbonization. Affordable housing is a sector where building decarbonization is both difficult and extremely high impact – emissions reductions make a major difference in tenant health and quality of life. The need for programs like this will only increase as more cities enact building emissions regulations like #BERDO in Boston and #LocalLaw97 in New York. These investments not only help cities meet their climate goals, but also improve air quality and comfort in low- and moderate-income communities. https://lnkd.in/eGXejp3m

What better way to stay cool in NYC in July than at Hines’s brand new, high-performance building by COOKFOX Architects for the #NY Decarb Summit? 🌞 🏙 Our VP Growth, Zeina Fayyaz Kim, was delighted to attend the Summit at Scott Donachie’s invitation. While the conference highlighted a range of #decarbonization topics and perspectives, a few comments stood out to her: ❇ Adin Meir sharing that he and his principals look at decarb through a #payback lens, and are focused on getting their portfolio “electrification-ready so that when tech and cost are right, we can do it”, ❇ Laura Spencer Humphrey wishing that utility data were easier to work with, and flagging the importance of prioritization in the decarb conversation - “highest impact things” first, ❇ Aundre Oldacre describing an all-tech-on-deck approach to a triple net zero project he is driving in Mt. Vernon, New York - “we are looking at everything”. Later that evening, Zeina met up with Michael Beckerman, Xan Winterton, and friends, ending the night 102 floors up with the highest-stamina crew in decarb. The built environment is the 2nd largest greenhouse gas emitting sector globally, and the largest in cities like New York. Hear from Thalo Labs CEO Brendan Hermalyn why buildings are the low-hanging fruit of the climate crisis, and how Thalo is on a mission to solve building sector emissions here in New York City and around the world.
Meet Dr. Brendan Hermalyn, a Newlab Brooklyn member and the Founder & CEO of Thalo Labs. The team at Thalo is on a mission to develop the next generation of building decarbonization solutions, using the built environment as a catalyst for carbon capture. Thalo Labs has created technology that transforms CO² emissions into aggregates, building materials, and more, fostering a circular economy that drives us towards a more sustainable future. Discover how Thalo is addressing New York City's primary polluter: the heating and cooling of its approximately one million buildings, which account for roughly 70% of the city’s CO² emissions. The "why" methane emissions are underestimated is actually pretty clear- if you don't measure, you don't reduce. Sadly this underestimation extends even beyond what's in this article- we are finding >60% of natural gas combusting systems in prime commercial buildings are leaking at point of combustion. Drawdown has to prioritize the low-hanging fruit of leakage.
Due to a lack of measurement technology and policy focus, we have drastically underestimated methane emissions. But, as these technologies that can measure, monitor, and quantify methane and other greenhouse gas emissions continue to improve, they don’t just unlock new business models and, ideally, more accountability for significant emitters.
