We know that being a teacher is one of the most important jobs in the world. And more often than not, the work you do extends past the classroom walls. This #TeacherAppreciationWeek, we say thank you for the countless reasons our corps members and alumni across Ohio make a difference! We’re also sharing exclusive deals and discounts for alumni and corps members. Check them out: https://lnkd.in/gfzNeJQa

Check it out! Talib Abdul-Khabir (Ohio ‘23) is currently teaching at the school he attended as a student. 🤗
TFW you walk through your high school halls…as a teacher 🥺 One of our newest corps members Talib Abdul-Khabir (Ohio ‘23) has come full circle twice: “My career started in teaching public school, meandered through school administration, [to] college professor, and is now closing back at Woodward,” he says. Abdul, we’re excited to see you back in the classroom - and at Woodward. 📚

Earlier this week we spotlighted alumni that began their service with AmeriCorps and Teach For America in the '90s, and today we are zooming forward! Meet incoming corps member, Ella Dastillung. Ella is currently serving with AmeriCorps VISTA. Hear how AmeriCorps has impacted her leadership and why she is excited to be a member of our 2024 cohort! "Serving with AmeriCorps lets me turn my passion for community service into real, impactful work that's aligned with the organization's mission of strengthening communities nationwide. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way, trying new things and meeting amazing people in the community along the way. It has led me to discover new passions, learn the history of the neighborhood I work in, and care so deeply about the future of the neighborhood, especially the youth that come to our organization. This passion is why I decided to apply to Teach For America, and I am so excited to become a teacher and use my skills to support the next generation of leaders in Cincinnati." #AmeriCorps #AmeriCorpsWeek #AmeriCorps30 ServeOhio

"I was inspired to directly serve young people in this country. TFA gave me confidence, training, exposure, and motivation to continue to lead and serve throughout my career." Thirty years later, Heather Torok (New Jersey '93) continues to pursue equity as a public health & philanthropic strategy consultant, working to improve health equity and healthcare outcomes. 🤩 #AmeriCorps #AmeriCorpsWeek #AmeriCorps30 ServeOhio

Pete Barnes began his teaching career as a 1996 D.C. corps member and continues to teach today! "I was inspired to serve because I wanted to make an immediate impact somewhere, and Teach For America seemed a place where I would be taking direct action. My TFA service still impacts my leadership even almost 30 years since I first started teaching. I still try to treat each new challenge with the mindset I used in corps. What is the problem? What can I do about it? What is the next step I can take today to start solving it? I think this mindset has served me well and keeps me from giving in to the negativity and fatigue that can plague veteran teachers." #AmeriCorps #AmeriCorpsWeek #AmeriCorps30 ServeOhio

Happy AmeriCorps Week - an annual recognition of the members who have raised their hands to serve. This year is particularly special as AmeriCorps celebrates 30 years! We are excited to honor this milestone throughout the week by spotlighting members of our network who have served over the past three decades. #AmeriCorps #AmeriCorps30
Happy AmeriCorps Week! This week is a celebration of all things AmeriCorps – from the programs and organizations that make this national service initiative possible in communities across the country, to the members who have pledged to “Get Things Done” since the program’s inception in 1994. 30 years later, more than 1.25 million AmeriCorps members and hundreds of thousands of AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers have taken that same pledge and served in communities large and small to help others live healthier, safer, smarter, and more resilient lives while enhancing their own skills and earning money for their education. Thank you Office of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted for making AmeriCorps Week official in Ohio and for your continued support of National Service! #MadeInAmeriCorps #AmeriCorps30

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, Teach For America is highlighting the impact of the National Pan-Hellenic Council on TFA corps members and alumni. These sororities and fraternities' deep commitment to scholarship, camaraderie, and service have left indelible marks on our society, including education. Clarke Perkins (Greater Cleveland '18), attorney and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, shared: "During my time in the corps, I was privileged to teach under a principal who is also a member of the Divine Nine. Many times, we and other faculty members would come to school in our paraphernalia, and the students would be so intrigued. I loved sharing my Greek life experiences – the hard work AND the good times – with our young scholars. Exposure is everything. My high schoolers learning about the existence of organizations that encapsulate Black excellence within the collegiate realm allowed many of them to begin looking at higher education in a more positive light." Use the link below to read reflections from other TFA corps members and alumni educators who are NPHC members to see how their organization’s values have helped them cultivate excellence, community, and pride in the classroom. https://lnkd.in/gWDYkXXE
