About us

For more than 36,000 dedicated public servants, our mission is to provide public safety, promote positive change in offender behavior, reintegrate offenders into society and assist victims of crime. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is the Lone Star State’s largest state agency and manages more than 146,000 offenders in state prisons, state jails and private correctional facilities that contract with the TDCJ. The agency also provides funding and certain oversight of community supervision and is responsible for the supervision of offenders released from prison on parole or mandatory supervision.

    Director of TDCJ’s Victim Services Division, Angela McCown, catalyzed meaningful change and impacted countless lives across the state of Texas in her over 30 years advocating for the rights of crime victims. For her efforts, she was selected by Governor Greg Abbott for the 2024 Outstanding Women in Texas Government Award. 🌟 Under her direction, the division implemented initiatives and revolutionized victim support. McCown's dedication has earned her numerous accolades, solidifying her reputation as a tireless advocate for justice.   • Officer Brekel Bishop began her career with TDCJ in April 2015 at the Holliday Unit in Huntsville where she continues to serve today. She quickly gained the support and respect of her fellow officers and staff for her willingness to help those in need. In 2020, she was named as the facility's Program Officer where she oversight on the various programs at the unit, including new inmate orientation, recreational activities, life skills classes, and religious programs. Officer Bishop also serves as the Holliday Unit SECC Coordinator and organizes fundraisers to support community organizations. Her kindhearted approach in assisting others and positive attitude has paved the way for her success.   • In response to feedback from the CReWS Survey, #TDCJ spent approximately $3 million on new equipment for correctional officers across the state. Gloves, flashlights, redesigned thrust vest and air vests have been purchased to increase the safety of our officers. TDCJ is also deploying body cameras and tasers to 23 maximum security facilities. The agency will continue to assess survey responses for additional equipment upgrades.

  • Congratulations to the newest graduates of the 29th cohort of the STRIVE program at the O'Daniel Unit! 🎓 This program helps participating inmates learn important job and life skills before their release. It is a collaborative effort among the CID, the Parole Division, RID, RPD, the Windham School District, and agency volunteers. Texas Board of Criminal Justice member Molly Francis was the graduation's keynote speaker. Program graduate Ashley Olivarez received the Derrelynn Perryman Overcomer Award during the ceremony. Congratulations, graduates! ⭐️

  • For 47 years, Dolores Billman has been dedicated to helping incarcerated individuals at the O'Daniel Unit learn the craft of braille writing through the facility's Braille Program. During her tenure as program manager, Ms. Billman has impacted hundreds of inmates' lives and made remarkable contributions to the growth and success of the program. She played a pivotal role in developing the curriculum for the program and was instrumental in organizing and hosting two in-prison braille conferences, attracting visitors from 13 states. For her many contributions and years of service, the Texas Board of Criminal Justice officially renamed the braille facility "The Billman Braille Center" in her honor.
