  • Despite the changes and evolution of the newspaper industry over the decades, many small-town newspapers continue to thrive as vital sources of local news and information for their respective communities. The Lynn County News is a weekly newspaper published in Tahoka, Texas, first established by Otis and Inez Lilly in 1903. As a local newspaper, the Lynn County News is deeply embedded in the community it represents. The paper's coverage reflects the residents' values, interests, and aspirations, capturing the diverse stories, events, and voices that make up the fabric of the local area. Though ownership has changed hands numerous times over the decades, it has always remained dedicated to serving the local community with trusted news and information. The paper's current owner, Kristina Janet-Sherrill, took over in October 2023, continuing a family legacy as her grandparents previously owned the publication in the 1960s-70s. Recently, the Lynn County News was honored with a Texas Treasure Business Award by the Texas Historical Commission. The program pays tribute to the state’s well-established businesses and their exceptional historical contributions to communities across Texas. Texas Treasure Business Awards are given out quarterly, with the next round of nominations being processed on August 1. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gQYcY_86

  • Following an incredible restoration journey, the Mason County Courthouse will be rededicated on July 13, 2024. This neoclassical courthouse, built in 1909, has risen from the ashes after a devastating arson fire in February 2021. The Texas Historical Commission's Courthouse Preservation Program was crucial in the building's revival, providing funding and expertise to ensure its authentic restoration adhered to historical preservation standards and met modern safety and accessibility requirements. The details have been carefully restored or recreated, from the salvaged first-floor windows to the newly crafted courtroom furniture. The iconic cupola, affectionately called the courthouse's "crown," was placed atop the building in April 2023, marking a significant milestone in the restoration process. The rededication is part of Mason's 59th annual Round Up Weekend, featuring a parade, rodeo, and courthouse open house. The courthouse has been a focal point of Mason's central square for over a century, and the restoration helps preserve Mason County's legacy. Event info: https://lnkd.in/ginPkdU8
