Three key takeaways from the Philadelphia Department of Commerce Tech Industry Partnership meeting we hosted, mirroring post-pandemic convenings we've hosted across markets: *Regional tech employment and startup activity varies by county. (For example, Pennsylvania's Montgomery County's tech industry has shrunk the last five years, while Philadelphia city's has grown). *Every big employer is a tech employer, and a tech buyer. (From corporate to government, those outside of the traditional tech sector matter). *Startup communities changed, and so how they gather has too. Attendees included big employers (Accenture, Deloitte, Comcast, Vanguard, L3Harris), government (Commerce, city IT, SEPTA and Pennsylvania, the Federal Reserve Bank), startup and growth tech firms (Burro, Perpay Inc., IncentFit, CGI) and a few key workforce and community groups.

Nearly 10 years after DC launched an initiative to reduce traffic deaths, the number of people killed by cars hit a new high. Officials acknowledge they missed the goal to eliminate this danger "by 2024," but point to several recent tech advances — from smart signs to transparent dashboards to more speed cams — that aim to turn things around. "We don’t have all the answers," said Charlie Willson, director of Vision Zero under the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Operations and Infrastructure, "but we do have a plan." As always, some of the companies listed on the 2024 Inc. 5000 as Delaware-based are actually located elsewhere (a result of out-of-state companies incorporated in Delaware using a Delaware mailbox address), so I did a bit of vetting for a more locally-focused list. For Dama Health, a fast-growing London startup that focuses on personalized medicine for women, Philly is the gateway to the all-important US market. The company started as a research project, with cofounder Paulina Cecula and her partners seeking a way to eliminate the trial and error stage of finding the right birth control. After the company participated in a University City Science Center, it discovered a welcoming environment on the East Coast. “It just made a lot of sense for us,” Cecula told Technical.ly.
