  • We would like to introduce some members of the new Literacy Leader Cohort! Over the next 2 years, these educators will participate in a development program designed to provide select middle and high school educators across the city with advanced training and coaching opportunities in the science of reading. Cohort members will receive expert training in the science of reading and leadership development, and the opportunity to apply credits toward a Master’s Degree. Additionally, they’ll participate in engaging workshops, enlightening school visits, and collaborative networking sessions. We are so excited to see what the future holds for these powerful educators!

  • A cornerstone of NSNO is advocacy, as well as providing you with resources and information that can be helpful in your day-to-day life in and outside of classrooms. There were a number of bills introduced this past legislative session that may affect the well-being, autonomy, and rights of students and educators. At the core of all of our work is maintaining an environment that supports positive outcomes for children and educators. We want students to meet their academic goals and feel a sense of belonging. We are grateful for the rich diversity and experience represented in our classrooms, and we want to ensure that every child and educator feels fully supported by their school. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be informing you of the bills that were passed or proposed that could affect what happens in classrooms, relationships teachers have with their students, teachers' personal finances, and more. We strongly encourage you to stay engaged, stay informed, and take action to advocate for the needs of our collective community.

Recently, Grow Your Own New Orleans held a retreat for the teachers and leaders of each program. This was a time to come together, reflect on progress, and plan for the future. This was an especially important time because GYO is expanding from 6 schools to 9. This retreat was crucial for aligning strategies and enhancing all collaborative efforts. We focused on setting a clear purpose for our work, re-normed our roles/responsibilities, and began building our collaborative calendar to ensure a smooth transition and successful expansion. We are excited to see how bright the future is for each cohort of students in all 9 schools! • On a Friday in April at KIPP Morial School, Ms. Markuisha Patton stood beneath large letters taped across the front wall of her Social Studies classroom: Time ripples today’s waves. Together, Ms. Patton and her eighth-graders have taken a critical eye to history–to see the way the past ripples forward to the present. They’ve concluded the end of the year, and they’ve made their way through a rigorous social studies curriculum that Ms. Patton wrote. This fall, Ms. Patton and educators in classrooms at roughly 75% of schools citywide started using the new, more rigorous materials. She’s found that while the material is more challenging, her students were more engaged. This resulted in increased outcomes amongst her classes. Take a look at the curriculum in action!
