The Taktile team had the chance to attend Finovate Fall this week in New York City. Some quick highlights and takeaways from the event: 1. Compliance, compliance, compliance. As banks, especially those that partner with fintechs, continue to face heightened regulatory scrutiny, compliance was top of mind for stakeholders across the ecosystem: banks, fintechs, and infrastructure providers. New tech holds the promise of greater degrees of automation, enabling banks and fintechs to better scale compliance activities without scaling cost. 2. AI. It was seemingly everywhere, with the description "AI-powered" being tagged on to all kinds of products and services. Large language models and generative AI, specifically, were at the forefront, including from compliance vendors. Still, it remains challenging to separate hype from reality, and AI-powered solutions continue to face skepticism from regulators about their fairness and explainability. 3. Brokered deposits. With the recently proposed FDIC rule that would functionally roll back 2020's loosening of brokered deposit regulation, the potential impacts, should the rule be finalized, were a hot topic -- literally, in the case of a live recording of the Breaking Banks Fintech Podcast featuring our own Jason Mikula discussing that and other regulatory topics with a side of chips and hot sauce. 4. Open banking. The chatter at Finovate around open banking was mostly forward looking, with many speculating a final 1033 rule could be introduced as early as next month, potentially being announced at Money20/20 in late October.5. Macro and credit cycle. With inflation moving back towards the Fed's long-term 2% target and the employment market cooling, attendees, especially those that do lending, are wondering if the Fed will stick a "soft landing" or if we're headed for a recession. Markets are widely expecting a 0.25% point rate cut at the Fed's next meeting. Still, newer lenders that haven't been tested through the cycle are right to be cautious and keep a close eye on their credit policy and underwriting.
