It is #NationalHeatAwarenessDay! Check out this post from Tailwind Co-Founder Katie MacDonald on a new 'Heat and Health' tool launched today by the Biden-Harris Administration 🌡 Emilie Mazzacurati
Today is #NationalHeatAwarenessDay - a day that reminds us that extreme heat remains the largest source of deaths across weather-related hazards ☀ We hit a record number of heat related deaths in the US last year. The death certificates of over 2,300 people in 2023 in the United States mentioned excessive heat as cause of mortality (and a study from Texas A&M estimates the total number of actual heat related deaths was over 11,000). Given the enormity and seriousness of this challenge, it is great to see today's announcement from the Biden-Harris Administration about the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)'s newly minted 'Heat and Health Tool' for communities! This tool combines: 🌡 Historic temperature data 🚨 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) data on heat-related emergency responses 📊 Data on community characteristics, including pre-existing health conditions, socio-demographic information, and characteristics of the natural and built environment It then uses these data to provide a final heat and health index ranking by ZIP code, which can be used to empower strategic, data-informed decision-making. Spread the word, check it out, and stay cool! 💪 #heatseason #summer2024 https://lnkd.in/eTfUSUk7

Rockstar panel this morning at Battelle's Innovations in Climate Resilience Conference, featuring Tailwind's co-founder Katie MacDonald, ISeeChange's founder and CEO Julia Kumari Drapkin, Streetlife Ventures's co-founder Sonam Velani and Kettle's new head of partnership Alex Laplaza. Key takeaways 🤓 👉🏻 We need more hard tech innovation in adaptation and resilience: There are some physical solutions that are starting to be deployed, like BurnBot, Inc. wildfire management robots, but we need more of them. 👉🏻 Last mile delivery is critical! Researchers, scientists and innovators need to develop their product with the end customers in mind, and work with frontline communities for most impact. 👉🏻 Pick you source of financing carefully: Venture Capital is the most expensive type of financing, compared to grants and other non-dilutive awards. There are many federal programs to support climate-related R&D right now, lean on those as much as possible. 👉🏻 Other ways government can help: make procurement easier and more accessible, give access to testbed for new technologies in real-life settings, point researchers towards the greatest needs for innovation. 👉🏻 Don't let the better be the enemy of the good: data may not be perfect, but it can already help save life. Share findings early and often, start deploying measures that can help protect residents from extreme heat, floods and other climate hazards. Much remains to be done, but it was exciting to hear from thought-leaders in the field about their work! 🚀

Check out what we're up to at Tailwind in this new interview with our Co-Founder Katie MacDonald from Adapt Unbound and please join our team at this event! Promo code: TAILWIND10 for 10% off tickets 🎟 ! #climateresilience #climateadaptation #innovation
New to our #AdaptUnbound summit series, we’re launching our popular #UnboundShowcase interviews, now spotlighting climate adaptation heroes. Today, we chat with Katie MacDonald, co-founder of climate resilience innovator Tailwind. Climate change is here. Are we ready? Unbound Summits asks; Katie Answers: 🔹 Inspiration Behind Tailwind: Witnessing the devastating impacts of climate change and the lack of focus on adaptation solutions fueled Katie's mission to champion resilience. 🔹Exciting Technologies: Tailwind explores a vast range of solutions, from community-driven infrastructure design (ISeeChange) to self-renewing air filtration systems (Metalmark Innovations) and AI-powered flood risk assessment (HighTide Intelligence). 🔹 Funding Gaps: The adaptation space faces significant early-stage investment, R&D, and project finance gaps. Tailwind is working to bridge these gaps and map the current funding landscape. 🔹Addressing Skeptics: The human and economic costs of inaction are staggering. Adaptation saves lives, protects assets, and creates a $2 trillion market opportunity. 🔹 Advice for Entrepreneurs: Know your customer and their specific needs within the complex governance landscape. Advocate for adaptation as a critical complement to mitigation efforts. Become a vocal advocate for policy and investment that supports the industry. 🔹 Future Risks: Mitigating maladaptation (solutions that worsen vulnerability) and ensuring community engagement are crucial for long-term success. As always, we'd love to hear from you if you have a unique take on the adaptation and resiliency space. Email [email protected] or jump into the comments to be a part of a future #UnboundShowcase! 🌏 Unbound Summits connect innovators and accelerate climate action. ➡️ Learn more about Tailwind's mission to build a resilient future at https://lnkd.in/ed5vrS53 Vibrant Data Labs #Adaptation #ClimateAction #resiliency
