Honors Double Major in Biosystems Engineering & Civil Engineering, Combination Welder, Otis A. Singletary Scholar
This summer, I completed a field engineer internship with The Systems Group for a Nucor Corporation steel mill at a greenfield site in Apple Grove, WV. This $3.1 billion project is the largest investment in Nucor’s history and will feature a high-end automotive galvanizing line and construction-grade line, on top of having one of the lowest carbon footprints of any sheet mill in the world! I had an incredible time learning about the production and processing of steel and the wide variety of skills and talents needed to successfully manage large-scale construction projects. During this internship, I had the opportunity to work alongside some talented surveyors, estimators/schedulers, engineers, project managers, and foremen in the design, fabrication, excavation, and installation of the various utilities and pipelines needed to support the steel making process. I want to extend my appreciation to Rodger Rogers for sharing his experience in project management, Chase Rowan for being a great engineer and mentor, Jesse Mitchell II for sharing his knowledge of scheduling and estimating, and Matt Hayes for mentoring me on surveying and constructability. I also want to thank Gina Zeigler, Kyle Morgan, Charlotte Rogers, and the entire Systems Group team for their support and effort in making this internship so fantastic!
