About us

Our story began in the 1980s with a distinctive value: the incessant search for innovation, while respecting nature and ethics. These are the qualities that enabled our legacy company, Valagro, to successfully establish in the Italian market. During the 1990s, a focus on innovation and customers allowed Valagro to launch further into the European market and affirm its presence in China, South America, and the US. In October 2020, Syngenta acquired Valagro, an investment made based on a shared foundation of science-based innovation. Following the acquisition, both companies have worked together closely in service of farmers everywhere, sharing knowledge and leveraging capabilities crucial for a world-leading biologicals business. In July 2023, Syngenta and Valagro announced the new corporate brand for our expanding biologicals business: Syngenta Biologicals, marking an exciting time in our history. Syngenta Biologicals formalizes our one-team approach in the markets, giving us a single and market-leading identity. At the heart of it all is our people, working towards the purpose of helping farmers improve productivity, while creating a sustainable future for people and nature.

Research is crucial to generate innovation. Ilaria Lebano, our Head of Biostimulant Microbial Technologies, is the leading author of a peer-reviewed paper published in the “Scientific Report” journal that shows the benefits of MALDI-TOF MS analysis, the Atessa Research Center in-house technology, for the study and comparison of large microbial datasets. This study is important as its findings can lead to several promising achievements, allowing us to speed up the delivery of new microbial-based solutions including biostimulants, biocontrol products, and biological seed treatments, thus offering more choices and flexibility to farmers. This week marks a significant milestone in the history of our company; the one-year anniversary of Syngenta Biologicals. It is 12 months, nearly to the day, that we formalized our one-team approach in the market, with the launch of Syngenta Biologicals, bringing together Valagro – the pioneer in biostimulants and specialty nutrients, acquired by Syngenta in 2020, with Syngenta’s in-house biologicals business and innovation strength. Our industry-leading technologies, unparalleled research expertise, and global commercial capabilities, are energized by the entrepreneurial spirit and culture Valagro has always been reputed for. We marked this unique moment with the rebranding of our Atessa site, reinforcing our drive to give farmers more complementary product and technology choices to help make agriculture more sustainable. Celebrate with us. #SyngentaBiologicals #Rebranding #Innovation #Sustainability

Partnering is crucial to innovate boldly and bring more choices for farmers. Today we are excited to announce Syngenta’s partnership with Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc.-bioworks, which is building the leading platform for cell programming and biosecurity, to accelerate the launch of a new biological solution. Through this new collaboration, Ginkgo plans to develop and optimize a microbial strain that can meet the productivity targets of a secondary metabolite from our pipeline. The successful, cost-effective and large scale production of this targeted metabolite will significantly expedite Syngenta’s go-to-market timeline for this pioneering biological solution. Our industry leadership and innovative solutions were front and center at the 100th edition of the ISF World Seed Congress in Rotterdam. Our experts entered into thought-provoking dialogues during the Channel World Seed sessions to explain how we support customers, thanks to seed treatment solutions, in controlling fusarium and pythium, two of the biggest enemies for a farmer as both key seed and soil-borne diseases, the potential and impact of trends such as regenerative agriculture practices for the future of agriculture, and how digital innovation in agriculture plays a key role to assist growers with new tools and technology.  An important part of the program was the Women’s Luncheon panel, also sponsored by the Seedcare business, a great occasion to talk about overcoming obstacles, tackling challenges, mentoring, and female leadership within the agricultural sector. The Western Corn Rootworm significantly threatens European farmers' productivity, especially in regions with continuous maize cultivation and insecticide resistance, creating ideal conditions for its spread as an impact of climate change.   Today we are excited to announce our collaboration with Lithos Crop Protect GmbH for the distribution in Europe of a sprayable pheromone formulation for mating disruption to control a key pest in corn, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Western Corn Rootworm).  This new biocontrol innovation offers farmers an additional option to the current integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to safeguard crops and restrain the advance of pests, improving sustainability and yield. https://lnkd.in/diKggBsM
