About us

swissnex in San Francisco is an initiative of Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI), managed in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affairs as an annex of the Consulate General of Switzerland in San Francisco. A public-private venture, we are part of a network of outposts in India, Boston/New York, Brazil, and China. Along with individual science and technology counselors around the world, we work on behalf of Switzerland to expand education, research, and innovation. Vital financial support is provided by donors and sponsors sharing Swissnex in San Francisco’s commitment to connecting the dots. Swissnex in San Francisco is a space, a service, and a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas in science, education, art, and innovation. Through our public events and study tours, we highlight the best of Swiss and North American ingenuity and create opportunities for networking among our diverse group of professional contacts in the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley, and beyond. We offer workspace in the heart of downtown San Francisco and the resources to help international guests, start-ups, university outposts, entrepreneurs-in-residence, and other visitors succeed.

    👋 Meet Geraldine Normand Jacot Don't miss out on August 12 as we begin our 2-week Multimedia Lab for Journalists. This program is created for both experienced and aspiring professionals in journalism and multimedia storytelling. We're pleased to feature Geraldine, one of the 10 selected participants. 🗽After studying journalism in Paris and interning in TV production in New York, Geraldine Normand Jacot decided to return to Switzerland to join RTS as a video journalist. Since 2022, she's led the Switzerland section, using her extensive media experience to inform and inspire Swiss audiences. 🤖Geraldine’s project, “Connecting the News," aims to immerse the audience in the heart of local stories through an interactive multimedia documentary. With the help of an intelligent chatbot, offering deeper insights and understanding of regional news to those interested, she wants to take the audience behind the scenes of events that shape our society. During her time here, Geraldine wants to explore the latest trends in technology and develop expertise in digital and multimedia journalism.     👋 Meet Cyrill Pinto This year, from August 12 to August 23, we have the pleasure of hosting Cyrill, one of 10 participants of our Multimedia Lab for Journalists program designed for professionals in journalism and multimedia storytelling. During this 2-week program, selected candidates will participate in a bunch of workshops exploring the future of journalism and events to connect with the Bay Area.  📰Cyrill Pinto has been working in journalism since 2004. He joined Ringier AG, a swiss media group, in 2013 where he produced reports and news features from Switzerland and abroad. Cyrill produced articles on politics, business, and breaking news as a news editor at SonntagsZeitung. Since 2024, he has been  part of the editorial team of Tages-Anzeiger, covering national politics. 🌐Cyrill's project will examine Switzerland's current immigration trends, similar to the USA historical wave from a century ago. How is the country addressing the challenges, like the rise of housing prices? What strategies and journalistic methods can be employed to spotlight these issues and suggest remedies? During his time here, Cyrill wants to exchange and share experiences with local journalists and editorial teams. He aims to discover new tools for storytelling, such as AI and how they can be implemented in journalistic projects.  🤝 Connect with Cyrill on LinkedIn to support his research.

    👋 Meet Benjamin Magnin Benjamin is joining us on August 12 as we kick off our Multimedia Lab for Journalists. This 2-week intensive program is created for experienced and aspiring professionals in journalism and multimedia storytelling. We are happy to present Benjamin, one of our 10 participants. 📽️After studying media sociology and cinema at the University of Zurich and Paris, Benjamin Magnin worked as a cinema journalist and for few years as a researcher at RTS. He then produced documentary and fiction at CAB Productions and freelanced as a script consultant for different swiss film productions (i.e “Double Vie” from Bruno Deville). Since 2018, he has been a commissioning editor and producer at SRF, co-producing “Neumatt” (sold to Netflix) and “Tschugger” (co-production with Sky Switzerland). 🦾Benjamin's project aims to develop a series using extensive AI tools (like ChatGPT, Claude, and Largo.AI) from the script development to the post-production and explore its potential and limitations in film production. Supported by SRF, the goal is to collaborate and exchange with Hollywood-based companies in San Francisco to access the Know-How. During his time here, Benjamin wants to connect with key players in the technological industry and AI experts. He aims to develop the first season's storylines of a TV show and conduct the preproduction using AI tools. 🤝 Connect with Benjamin on LinkedIn to support his project.

    👋 Meet Fabian Hock On August 12, we will kick off our Multimedia Lab for Journalists. The 2-week intensive program is designed for established and emerging professionals in journalism and multimedia storytelling. Fabian is one of 10 selected candidates to join the program. Fabian Hock is the head of the international department at the Swiss newspaper group CH Media and responsible for the international reporting of Aargauer Zeitung, Luzerner Zeitung, St. Galler Tagblatt, and all other newspapers and portals affiliated. Fabian's project will be a deep dive into the MAGA movement. Behind “Make America Great Again”, Donald Trump's campaign slogan, a social movement has formed that could bring the ex-president back into the White House. Who are these people and what motivates them? During his time here, Fabian wants to meet decision-makers and people who have an influence on US politics, have special knowledge of US politics, and are responsible for technological developments that shape American society or political processes. 🤝 Connect with Fabian on LinkedIn to support his research.

    Join us in welcoming Peter Schwendner to San Francisco 🌁. He joins us as part of Swissnex’s Impact Sabbatical program, which allows Swiss researchers, professors, and lecturers to spend an Impact Sabbatical at Swissnex in San Francisco. 🧳 Peter Scgwendner leads the Institute of Wealth and Asset Management at Zurich University of Applied Sciences. He gained 15 years of experience as a quant in the financial industry after earning his PhD in physics. His research focuses on evidence-based sustainable finance decision-making. The Swiss research foundation supports his project, https://lnkd.in/eH5VKitj, which aims to link remote-sensing-based biodiversity indicators of corporate impacts to financial valuations and portfolio allocations. Peter has in-depth experience in implementing machine-learning techniques in portfolio allocation through collaboration with leading asset managers. He is also a Certified Instructor and University Ambassador at the NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute. Additionally, Peter runs working groups within several COST actions to link researchers across Europe. During his time at Swissnex San Francisco, Peter aims to establish contacts with key players in Geospatial ESG technology and applications to create partnerships. The sabbatical program at Swissnex is designed to immerse participants in the vibrant innovation ecosystem of the San Francisco Bay Area, offering them access to new ideas, connections to a local audience, and support in further developing their research projects.
