BPI is #collaborative 🤝✔️ BPI's approach is systemic, involving collaboration with a diverse network of members and organizations beyond product companies to include composters, municipalities, restaurants, government officials, academic scientists, and consumer groups. This cross-section of the value chain creates informed positions so that items can be composted in practice and, in the future, composted at scale. Familiar with the United States Postal Service's sustainability goals? This summer, GreenBlue Executive Director Paul Nowak and SPC Director Olga Kachook met with U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to discuss and support the agency's sustainability targets. Earlier this year, USPS shared their ambitious goals to divert 75% of waste from landfills, increase recycled content in packaging to 74%, and increase packaging recyclability to 88%. We were happy to hear that they've already made progress on these and other goals—and that their efforts were recognized with a Presidential Federal Sustainability Award. As USPS participates in both the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and How2Recycle® (H2R) programs, we look forward to working with the agency to accelerate a Postal Service powered by sustainable packaging practices. "Does PLA create persistent microplastics?" A common bioplastics question that hasn't had a straightforward answer - until now 🌏 A new peer reviewed meta-study by Holland Bioplastics and HYDRA Marine Sciences found that in the presence of water or humidity, #PLA will fully hydrolyze, and no persistent nano- or microplastics will remain or accumulate in the environment. Read the full study: https://ow.ly/eFUs50SBMCr Interested in building on this knowledge? In order for #reuse to work, it has to be easy for #consumers. Reuse as the default is exactly what the city of Petaluma, CA is implementing in their reusable cup pilot study this summer. Making reusables ubiquitous within their small community, from locally owned coffee shops to busy fast food establishments, will (hopefully) simplify the process enough for consumers to engage and succeed at this new program. Coincidentally, our SPC team is hard at work developing a 10-step #roadmap to reuse that will explore how to activate reuse as the default, advance supportive policies, and deliver value to consumers - stay tuned for the new resource launching in November! https://ow.ly/BSS550SAoEQ
In Petaluma, California, to-go cups will now be reused all around town
