Meet SOA's Deep-Sea Delegation at the ISA 🌊 July 15 marks the first day of this month's Council & Assembly Meetings at the International Seabed Authority (ISA)—continuing negotiations on #DeepSeaMining regulations and the mining code and picking up where they left off at the close of the March 2024 meetings. As official Observers at the ISA, Sustainable Ocean Alliance is leading our largest delegation yet to advocate alongside our allies and partners against deep-sea mining. This meeting is particularly critical as we face: 1. A new election of the ISA Secretary-General 2. A first-time discussion on the need for a General Policy on the "protection and preservation of the marine environment" 3. Pro-mining nations like Nauru pushing for the completion of the mining code, despite the gaps in scientific knowledge and understanding required to develop a comprehensive policy In the article below, get to know the 13 ocean champions representing SOA at this month's ISA meeting: Daniel Caceres, Shannon Cosentino-Roush, Eugénia Barroca, Jessica Newfield, Stefanie Torres, Carlos Andrés Silva Quiroz, Adenike Alice ADEIGA, Catalina Reyes-Vargas, Stephania Añazco Rivera, Mario Gomez, Kyle Foster, Leneka T. Rhoden, MBA, MPM, BSc (Hons), Jaime-Leigh Edghill #DefendTheDeep #NoDeepSeaMining #JoinTheAlliance

#DeepSeaMining is officially BANNED in Hawai'i state waters! 🚫🌊⛏️ This week, ocean champion Hawai'i Governor Josh Green signed the Hawai’i Seabed Mining Prevention Act (SB 2575) into law, prohibiting “the mining, extraction, and removal of minerals from the seabed in all state marine waters” and preventing “the issuance of permits associated with seabed mining activities.” This win was made possible by the hundreds of young people, the Kānaka 'Ōiwi of Hawai'i, NGOs, political leaders, and more who demanded the protection of their Moana. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Hawai'i's timely ban comes ahead of this month’s meetings at the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to continue negotiations on deep-sea mining regulations and the mining code—signaling to the ISA and the U.S. that deep-sea mining has no place in our sustainable future. Now, it's time for the U.S. to follow suit of its champion states. Sign SOA's petition to Congress and the Biden Administration to say NO to deep-sea mining → https://bit.ly/us-dsm And stay tuned for updates from our team on the ground at the ISA over the coming weeks!

How much have sea levels risen in the last 30 years? 📈 In this visualization by NASA, sea levels have risen by more than 10 cm (nearly 4 inches) in the last 30 years (and this rate of change is rapidly increasing with global warming). It’s easy to discount only a few inches of sea level rise. What on earth could just a few inches do? Well actually, a lot. 👀 In many locations along the global coastlines, the rate of local sea level rise is GREATER than the global average due to coastal erosion, fossil fuel and groundwater extraction, and more—rendering some communities partially or entirely underwater. For humans, sea level rise impacts coastal infrastructure, freshwater supply, road access, power plants, and beyond. For wildlife, it impacts their habitats—from erosion of critical coastal ecosystems to changes in salinity. The short of it? Sea level rise impacts EVERYONE and EVERYTHING. So, what can we do about it? Global warming caused by an increase in greenhouse gas emissions is a primary driver of sea level rise. Reduce emissions, reduce the impact of sea level rise. Second, by protecting and restoring coastal habitats and ecosystems, we also protect coastal communities against the threats of sea level rise and climate change. Win win. 🙌
