ACTION ALERT 🚨 The Surfrider Foundation has been fighting for decades to protect our nation's coasts from the threat of new offshore drilling. Now, we are urging the Biden administration to permanently protect the Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern Gulf of Mexico from future offshore oil and gas leasing. Offshore drilling is a polluting activity that causes grave impacts through every phase of the process, from exploratory seismic blasting that harms marine life to the inevitable oil spills that damage our environment and coastal communities. Sign our action alert petition today to help ensure long-term protection for the marine environment, wildlife, and coastal recreation and tourism from Maine to Florida. https://hubs.la/Q02HJXfy0 #ProtectOurCoast #DrillingIsKilling

“One of the first Hawaiian sayings I learned is ‘mālama i ke kai a e mālama ke kai iāʻoe’ which means ‘care for the ocean and the ocean will care for you.’ The ocean is my happy place so it feels like my duty to do what I can to protect it and give back to the community!” -Kristina McHugh volunteers for Surfrider’s Maui chapter, supporting water testing and the expansion of the Blue Water Task Force program. 🧪🌊 Kristina has made a positive impact on her local community by monitoring the water quality of beaches and sharing the data to protect public health. The Surfrider Foundation is excited to collaborate with Professional Skateboarder and Olympian Heimana Reynolds and our friends at Alaska Airlines to protect coastal habitats and reduce single-use plastic waste. 🙌🌴🌊 Alaska Airlines is the first airline to eliminate plastic bottles, cups, straws, stir sticks, and citrus picks from inflight service. Transitioning to paper cups effectively removes 55 million plastic cups annually, helping to minimize single-use plastics in our marine environments. Surfrider is pleased to benefit from the airline’s commitment to reducing plastic pollution in coastal communities through beach cleanups, restoration activities, and local education. A huge thanks to all the volunteers who participated in our most recent beach cleanup together! 🙌 Click the link below to find a Surfrider event near you. https://hubs.la/Q02zjpHg0

Near record high ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, fueled by climate change and a shift to La Nina patterns in the Pacific, have created favorable conditions for an active and potentially dangerous Atlantic hurricane season. If you live somewhere at risk of hurricane impacts, it is extremely important to take proactive measures. Surfrider’s 2023 Beach Cleanup Report found that 86% of all items collected at our beach cleanups last year were single-use plastics. Our Beach Cleanup program focuses on ocean and coastal trash, primarily caused by rampant plastic pollution, through organized community action. The program also supports public education efforts and provides the underlying data needed to bolster Surfrider’s plastic pollution advocacy campaigns. We cannot clean our way out of this mess without large-scale legislative interventions and industry innovations to rapidly shift away from single-use plastic products. Click the link below to check out the annual report, and learn how Surfrider’s policy and programmatic activists are tackling this issue head-on.  https://hubs.la/Q02FYrFG0 📸: Shelly Guidera #BeachCleanupReport

The day after the 4th of July is the dirtiest beach day of the year. That’s why every year on July 5th, our amazing volunteers come together to clean up the mess left behind after Independence Day celebrations. Thanks to the 1,400 Surfrider volunteers who showed up to beaches across the country and removed over 50,000 pounds of trash (and counting)! It’s not too late to make a difference — donate to Surfrider today to fund our community of activists and experts working together to keep our beaches clean all year round. https://hubs.la/Q02Drx7B0 #5thofJuly #DirtiestBeachDay
